Anyway, we were very polite with the cop and after checking my friend DL, registration and insurance, he let him go for impeccable driving record.
Leading evidence: 'Check friend dl, registration and insurance, he let him go' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check friend dl, registration and insurance, he let him go' (1 discussions). Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Yesterday my friend and I drove through Arizona towards LA and he got pulled over by a State Trooper. Just bad luck for him, I guess, since we've been driving for a day and a half without issue doing an average speed of 80mph all along from Dallas as a starting point. We shared the driving back and forth. We just filled-up at this gas station and on the ramp he suddenly punched it to 102mph (confirmed on our Garmin Nav) just to get away from the traffic on I10 W but by the time he slowed down, the cop was already behind w/ flashing lights. Man, just the only time he sped, he got pulled over, that's really too bad... The cop came over and told us that he locked him at 98mph and in Arizona above 86mph he would take him directly to jail. Is this true considering that the speed limit was 75mph in that long stretch of freeway? Anyway, we were very polite with the cop and after checking my friend DL, registration and insurance, he let him go for impeccable driving record. Obviously he never got into this situation before, neither did I, so the questions to you guys are:
1) Do he needs to come back to AZ to attend Driving School if he is allowed to or can he take it in Dallas where we both live? He sped and will take responsability for it so he plans to just pay the ticket to get it over with.
2) How much would be the ticket for 24mph above speed limit in this situation?
Thanks,
I had a "like" incident a few years ago in Texas going west approaching El Paso. Officer Cook, Eastbound, spotted me just as I departed a rest area and quickly passed three other cars that had pulled out of the rest area just in front of me. Cook apparently estimated my speed based on my passing rate of the other cars (likely still accelerating up to the 75MPH limit), looked down at his radar and saw an indication (oncoming, closing velocity minus his roadspeed) of 87 MPH and wrote me a ticket for same.
He explained to me, roadside, his video running, that he had estimated my speed as above but went ahead and wrote me the ticket anyway. The Judge saw it a bit differently I assume since I had requested a copy of the video to prove "my" case.
Your AZ patrolman may have made his initial speed judgement in the same way but acted a bit more maturely, or maybe a tad more experienced.
When I said, the trooper let him go, I meant he did not take my friend to jail, but he still got a ticket. Since that incident, he only cruised at exact speed limit all the way to LA heh heh heh.
So yes the Cop is correct in that your buddy could have gone to jail for reckless driving in AZ at that speed.
It's a standard line they say to scare the cr@p out of you when they've pulled you over.
To answer your questions (from my personal experience)
1) If the court permits he can do an online traffic school - this depends on the offense and the particular court. Call the court number on the ticket on Tuesday AM, and ask them if the online service is available. Be prepared to be on hold for a while - they will be busy!
Call now rather than waiting for any paperwork to come - they may not get it to you in time to actually submit for the online school and complete it before the court deadline.
2) Depends on court etc, but expect to pay at least $120 or so for the ticket, and the same for traffic school online.
FYI - The AZ cops love to speed-trap visiting motorists, as they most often will just pay-up and not fight the ticket.
It's a nice revenue earner!
Get yourself a decent RADAR and LASER detector!!!
Thanks Chris, I will let my friend know about the online traffic school info, that's great... Hope he can get it done online. As for the ticket, again we never really speed for the past day and a half on the road, just that particular moment when he decided to punch the throttle to keep up with the current traffic flow on I10 from the on-ramp after some gasoline fill-up. I think the trooper was driving through when we came on I10 W right in front of him, just perfect timing for him to lock down our speed. This is one of those time when all the stars seem to align themselves perfectly and there was nothing we could have done to avoid it. As for the exact location, I can't remember where exactly but it was for sure before we entered CA state line. From Google maps, it could be very well be Quartzsite location you mentioned.
Thanks,
Assuming neither of you made any admissions of speeding on the video I would suggest you supena the video through the courts and after viewing it decide if the officer may have compromised his testimony in the same way the TX officer did with me.
In that case it might be worthwhile contesting the citation.
Insurance increase might be a serious hit in the pocketbook.
