So instead of paying the $10 admin fee to have a sheriff/check station sign off on me having front plates after putting them on, I always just walked into the LA courthouse and paid $92 to dismiss the ticket by paying the full fine.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

I know about the KMA plates, but never really understood how that worked.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I never got a no front plate ticket until relocating to SoCal (from NorCal) a bit over a year ago. Got two no front plate tickets, both around the Hollywood/Sunset area. Was in my M5, which doesn't even have drill holes, and I didn't want to put holes in the bumper. So instead of paying the $10 admin fee to have a sheriff/check station sign off on me having front plates after putting them on, I always just walked into the LA courthouse and paid $92 to dismiss the ticket by paying the full fine. Got my third no front plate ticket a couple months ago, and had until 2/18 to either get it corrected ($10), or dismissed via full fine ($92). My own fault, but I was an idiot and was travelling out of country, so I figured instead of calling and mailing in my fee, I'd just skip that date figuring I'd get another notice in the mail with some late penalty. Well, I got another notice alright - "As a result of your failture to appear, the court has placed a hold on your driver's license with the DMV. DMV will suspend your driving privilege if you fail to clear this matter....blah blah blah...a civil assessment of $250 was added to your bail...blah blah blah. Bail amount: $610 Holy c..p! Sure makes paying the $92 by the due date a bargain.

POST 2Original post

While it won't always help avoid blatant infractions, having an 11-99 Foundation plate frame has saved me from tickets on more than one occasion...on my motorcycles as well as my cars. On a few instances cops have given my a "slow down" gesture when my speed was clearly enough justification for a speeding ticket. Since it's tax deductible and is for a good cause anyways, the net cost of the membership fee is more than made up by ticket fines avoided and increased insurance premiums.

POST 3Original post

You must have gotten the ticket from a police officer and signed the ticket - which constitutes your promise to appear in court to answer the charge. When you did not appear in court or pay the fine it becomes a failure to appear which is a misdemeanor. At least his is how it works in Santa Clara County. Go to the traffic court clerk and get an arraignment date. Then tell your story to the judge and the failure to appear will most likely be dismissed. Get the back of your ticket signed by a police officer before you go to court.

POST 4Original post

David, I don't think city police and county sheriffs like 11-99.

POST 5Original post

What year is your M5? My M5 has had plates on the front from day 1 - in July 2000. Holes were there when it rolled off the truck from the factory. Steve 99 996 00 M5

POST 6Original post

Viken - any reason in particular? I have never had any problems with police or sheriffs...any insights would be appreciated. And to be honest, if they had an equivalent organization I would be happy to make a donation...even w/o any supposed "benefits"...their job is hard enough already. I know about the KMA plates, but never really understood how that worked.

POST 7Original post

I agree with Viken as that is the way it is in Santa Clara County. San Jose Police and the Santa Clara County Sheriff do not care about your 11-99 CHP license plate frame.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2001 Blk/Blk M5; I was in NorCal at the time, but drove down in Mar 2001 to Nick Alexander BMW in SoCal to buy/pickup the car. Car arrived and was ready for me, as specified, with no front plate drill holes.

POST 9Original post

Well the $600 was for basically being a fugitive from justice, not for the plates. Much, much, much more serious however, is if (for failure to appear) they suspend your license and then you get stopped for ANYTHING at all, so make sure your license is in good standing before you drive again. C. (has learned to my cost, that you don't ignore tickets)
