Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I use street tires also when I go to the track, so I guess that's a consideration in early spring and late fall.

Suggestion

There are a couple of issues, though - remember that a change of 10 degrees is about 1 psi - so from an ambient @ 40 to an operating temp near 200 equals a pretty big jump in PSI...

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There have been some excellent days here recently. Bright sunlight, light breeze, blue skies, snow all melted, road salt washed out from earlier rains. Problem is that it's still freakin' cold, going down to the teens. Took the car with summer tires out on a jaunt, anyway. Just curious. Anyone here know what ambient temps the OEM summer tires our cars come with operate best at? Or, at what low temp do we expect the performance to get compromised? I know, I know, move to sunny Calif or get winter tires. Just curious, is all.

POST 2Original post

Hi, the general rule of thumb is that below 7Celsius ambient temperature winter tyres provide more grip than summer tyres. That's for public roads only. Cheers, Uwe

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, Uwe. I was beginning to think nobody had an answer. 7 celsius is about 44-45 Fahrenheit. Hmmm. That's pretty warm. I use street tires also when I go to the track, so I guess that's a consideration in early spring and late fall.

POST 4Original post

FWIW, I've heard similar. Depending on materials content, performance will degrade at temps below 40/45 degrees. There are a couple of issues, though - remember that a change of 10 degrees is about 1 psi - so from an ambient @ 40 to an operating temp near 200 equals a pretty big jump in PSI... if the ambient were, say, 90, the increase would be less.
