However, I don't think the computer keeps track of such information using mileage or dates, but instead uses hours of engine operation.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 2003 996 had approximately 100 miles on the odometer when I bought the car new from the dealership. I was wondering if an over rev (the kind resulting from shifting into a lower gear at too high a speed) had occurred on the car prior to my purchase if I would be able to prove that by a date stamp (or mileage stamp) in the car's computer? Otherwise, although I have only put less than 50 miles driving the car home to date, Porsche could always argue I was at fault and not honor a future warranty claim. Any insight as to what additional data is tracked in the car's computer along with an over-rev incident would be greatly appreciated. John

POST 2Original post

John, The cars computer logs all such activity and from my understanding can not be erased. However, I don't think the computer keeps track of such information using mileage or dates, but instead uses hours of engine operation. If this is a concern, take to the dealership and have them hook it up to the computer and show you the display. The computer tracks rev limit occurances (when you redline and the limiter kicks in by retarding the fuel delivery). I think the computer calls these Range 1. It also tracks the mechanical over revs (missed shifts) and I think it classifies them as Range 2. The read out will show you how many of each type and how many hours of engine operation ago it took place. I will look for a picture of someones read out from another thread and post here.
