I went with several rounds of the Seafoam GDI spray I use on my Panamera intake valves with brushes, and then moved on to a small flapper sanding wheel with my dremel to clean most of it up.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Should I even worry about doing any exhaust port cleanup beyond new gasket mating surfaces? There is some clear build up inside the ports, but I dont think its bad for the mileage. All six ports and inside the exhaust manifolds are really even and similar in coloration with no clear signs of old ball oil consumption to one or more cylinders. What are the thoughts on the pictures from some of the more experienced brains on the forum?

POST 2Original post

I mean they are off, why not clean them up a bit?

POST 3Original post

I would worry more about your muffler brackets . That is a rusty mess . Take them off , wire brush them and hit them with some high heat paint . I did mine in silver and they have held up well . Put anti seize compound on all nuts and bolts . How do you plan to clean up the exhaust ports ?

I actually have new muffler brackets in a box for that very reason and had planned to change them. But so far every part of this project to install my Agency Power headers has been so smooth and relatively low on the PITA scale that I dont want to tempt karma by lowering the engine to get to the upper hardware. That rusted nasty mess there is on the lower section is still solid, I was surprised. Now all have to do is rehang the PSE mufflers and put the bumper back on. Its always sounded great but Im hoping the headers will give it a change in tone. We will see tomorrow I went with several rounds of the Seafoam GDI spray I use on my Panamera intake valves with brushes, and then moved on to a small flapper sanding wheel with my dremel to clean most of it up. It wasnt as hard as I was expecting (same goood karma theme here) The reality is that the engine has over 244K miles now and as long as it makes it to 250K I am going to drop the engine and do the IMS Solution and UAOS (and UIDS if the $ are there). It will be easy to swap the brackets out then. Then Ill have the IMS bearing that comes out mounted on a plaque for probably being the only original factory 996.2 IMS bearing to make it to a quarter million miles. One day the motor will have to be rebuilt I have no doubt, but right now I have no signs/symptoms of scoring, timing chain pad wear, cam deviations are literally as close to perfect as possible (0.11 on #1 and 0.0 on #2). I just did my 30th oil change on the car in the 10 years Ive had it. This car is a long term keeper for me, so nothing I do is about maintaining a sense of value, only about reliability and driver engagement. Its worth more in pieces than it is as a whole car. In another 25 years it will labeled a survivor if it makes it. I feel so bad for all the peoples stories on Rennlist with their ownership nightmares and bad experiences with the 996, because my personal experience has been quite the opposite. Probably the most reliable car Ive ever owned. But I could have just as easily been on the same boat for never replacing the IMS.

POST 5Original post

At the very least, spray some penetrating fluid onto those rusty bolts so that youll have an easier time removing them in the future.

They were sprayed with Aerokroil several times in preparation for removal before I decided I didnt want to lower the engine. Have the new hardware and brackets back in the box on the shelf for now.
