Personally, I've found a set of rotors locally which were used for only 5K kilometres before they were replaced with Turbo parts.
Leading evidence: 'Replace with turbo parts' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check overall thickness, they appear' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Also when I've washed the car you can see "rust spots" on the disks, that will dissapear and stay gone after you have used the breaks.

Normal - but check the overall thickness, they appear to have been around awhile.

The bits that aren't rubbed clean by the brake pads will rust for sure.

I can't really say when the disks were replaced the last time but I want to know if it is something I should be prepared to replace at the next service.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi there,
I noticed something which I found quite concerning. Since this is my first Porsche (996 -99, 88000 km ) I just want to check if I need to replace anything or if it is normal. I can't really say when the disks were replaced the last time but I want to know if it is something I should be prepared to replace at the next service. Also when I've washed the car you can see "rust spots" on the disks, that will dissapear and stay gone after you have used the breaks.
I havent spoken to the dealer where I bought it yet, I thought it would be better to ask you guys first what you think since I'm a beginner.
So, these three pictures probably say more than a thousand words. Do I need to replace the disks? Do I need to be concerned. All disks on all wheels look like this. Other than this the car is in perfect shape, no problem at all and in perfect condition, no other rust.
By the way, these three pictures are from the same wheel.
Thanks!
David
PS. Sorry for the high res, but I thought that it would help to see what I'm talking about
Rust on the edges is normal. The rust spots on the surface of the disc will simply be scrubbed away when braking. I would only be concerned if there is any type of pulsation when braking or if the rotors have worn too thin.
Thanks man
That was what I wanted to hear.
So now when I dont have to put money on that, what should I settle for. Sell the car and buy the facelift version or invest in an Aerokit for this one?
David
Nope, I havent noticed anything like that. When I break it breaks as normal. I had an old Saab a few years ago which I really destroyed breaks on, so I know how it feels when they are "****ed up"
Thanks
Are you saying you think your brakes might be broken? Because you brakes can break or brake depending. Or if your mechanic gives you a break, your brakes might not break and then you don't have to worry about breaks within your brakes.
Your post mentions kilometers,--so I am guessing you're in Canada or some other rust-prone area. Perfectly normal, unfortunately. (Another reason I chose PCCBs).
Normal. I had it on my 993, 996 and also on the 997.
On my 993 one time I removed the rotors and bead last them. Painted the hat portion.
Normal on steel rotors.
+1 on the ridge being way too high. Those rotors appear to be toast. Tolerance is 26 mm front, 22 mm rear. Any thinner than that and you should replace them.
The rust is normal. Brake rotors are made of mild steel because it is better suited to the task than stainless. The bits that aren't rubbed clean by the brake pads will rust for sure.
I painted the hats on my new rotors so they won't rust. I'll be posting pics soon in my thread here on the subject.
pads and disc? or just disc?
if you have some basic tools (or can buy some) this is a very good and simple do it yourself job....saves you some money too (if you are in to that)
Nice car, welcome to the board!!!
Now lets talk about an "amerectomy" for those headlights
Ah I see, I might try that then. Thanks.
Just the disks. The pads cost an additional 4500 SEK (570$ USD) for all 4 wheels. Whats an amerectomy?
Also I read a thread about LED for tail-lamps, that cant be very hard to do by urself, all you need is a cascet that fits (can prolly do one with plastic padding, sand paper and some net and after that its just bying LED's, do some solder and you should be in business. Someone should try it.
Those prices are about in line with what someone would pay a shop in my area to do a set of brakes pads and rotors. I'm in Western Canada.
By the way - don't forget to flush your fluid.
I'm a little concerned about your shop quoting you on a rotor change without also quoting pads and a flush. Not a lot of competent shops around that would replace the rotors only are there?
Personally, I've found a set of rotors locally which were used for only 5K kilometres before they were replaced with Turbo parts. Those cost me $350 CDN (about $320 USD). Next I'll buy a set of pads from the USA - estimate $200, and then a litre or so of Motul brake fluid.
A few hours in the shop and $600 later I'm good for another campaign. I like doing the work myself not just because it saves me money, but also because I know *exactly* what was done and how it was done.
Ah, I understand. Yea but I think the problem is that you are required by law to have amber blinker lights on the front here in Sweden.
I'm not 100% but I know when you import cars from e.g. the US you often have to do modifications to the blinker lights to make the "street legal".
the blinkers in my car blink AMBER but are silver coated so they do nor reflect any amber into the lens area when not lit - (sold separately so truth be told the mod deos cost something..... like $20) the above link is for removing the lens from the inside of the headlight thus completely removing the "appearance" of amber, but leaving you with a still legal and working amber blinker
(Ed's hoping he jumps on the band wagon)
