Oh, before I had Safelite do glass checked with several Porsche dealerships.

Later on, when I was selling it, an 'enthusiat' commented that the glass was changed and he became less interested.

I had my windshield replaced a few thousand miles ago and called all the auto glass places.

Some folks look at the manufacturer logos on all the glass panels when looking to buy used cars too - so in that regard the car stays *original* at least to that degree.

Suggestion
What shocked me most was when I called on a Friday afternoon and they told me they could come by to replace the windshield in my 1999 996 Saturday morning.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Took a rock on the way to work... quarter to half dollar sized chunk of windshield crunched beyond repair.....
For those of you who have replaced their windshields.... what say you?
I had mine done by Safelite. I was impressed with the quality and workmanship. Installed it was under $500.
What shocked me most was when I called on a Friday afternoon and they told me they could come by to replace the windshield in my 1999 996 Saturday morning. They must have a big warehouse of windshields somewhere in Philadelphia.
I prefer OEM, but am not sure it really matters.
I have had 2 windshield replacements on my MY03 996 in the last couple years due to stone chips. The first time I had it installed at the dealer and paid about $750. Then I found out they simply contract with the local glass company to come in and do the work. For the second one I called that same glass company directly and had them do the replacement in my garage for around $500. So the "stealer" made a cool $250 off the first one for doing nothing. Insurance did reimburse the majority of my 2 claims.
Live and learn I guess. Call your local auto glass installer and specify the glass you want (OEM or aftermarket). Then have it done in your own garage under your watchful eye without any "shop supplies", or other b.s. dealer charges.
.
I would have a OE windshield put in. Appropriate manufacturer and logo on the glass in the corner. You are guaranteed that it will fit, etc. Some folks look at the manufacturer logos on all the glass panels when looking to buy used cars too - so in that regard the car stays *original* at least to that degree. You might save 50 bucks for OEM, but to me it's not worth it.
That was an issue with '65-'98 cars and their finicky seals, but I bet the 996 is more like a "normal" car.
I don't know why German glass is so soft, but it certainly seems to be.
^^What he said!
I had an M3 years back and a stone pieced the windshield. I got a bid from Irvine BMW for $1,200.00 and another bid from a local auto glass shop. The glass shop was around $800.00, so I went that route. Later on, when I was selling it, an 'enthusiat' commented that the glass was changed and he became less interested. Apparently, OEM glass goes to Dealerships (w/ all the appropriate logos and markings) while the aftermarket glass goes to all the outside glass shops.
On my Porsche, only Dealership glass gets installed...........
I have to agree! My '03 has a terribly pitted and scratched(from the wipers) windshield after only 64K mi. of normal driving. I can't help but wonder if aftermarket glass would be more durable.
up and I looked over replacement glass. Same as in car and in car was factory original. At that time (couple of years ago) no aftermarket windshield glass available.
Oh, before I had Safelite do glass checked with several Porsche dealerships. Found out they all contract out to Safelite for glass work.
Took installer couple of hours. He spent almost whole time working on car wiht one hand while other held cellphone to ear.
Was worried about quality of job but seems to have been a good install.
Taped top rubber seal down to prevent wind blast from lifting weather seal rubber while I drove car from office to home (30+ miles) and told me to be careful putting car into situations that twisted body -- which I avoid as much as possible anyhow -- and to not wash car for a while. Forget how long I had to wait.
Removed tape once car home and held off washing car for required time.
Glass has been in car now for at least 2 years, maybe more (maybe nearly 5 years) and still looks good though getting pitted. One small crack/rock chip but not growing.
Driven car in rain, washed it and no leaks.
Sincerely,
Macster.
I do think that OEM and most German glass is very soft and pits easily. But I think that the fit is the most important of all the variables, so I got OEM. Also when ordering your glass from a glass company, make sure that you tell them that you want experienced Porsche installers. The guys that came out to do mine, were done in 1 hour and used all the right sealants. He also told me not to be alarmed when I look down at the bottom corner and see the edge of the glass, that this is a known problem with Porsche windows. Also you may want to order a pollen filter and replace it, since they take off the covering and the filter is really easy to replace. I also take some 303 Vinyl and Plastic Protectant (30SPF) and put a good coat on the plastic on the dash right under the window. One thing I do regularily is to clay bar my front and rear windows. That takes off all the little invisible grime that stays on the window despite regular cleaning. JG (04 C4S)
I've always been told that the Germans had a higher standard of windshield required in their cars. My 996 does have one very small chip in the windshield, but the windshields in my Japanese cars and my American pickup are all cracked all over...
I had my windshield replaced a few thousand miles ago and called all the auto glass places. The best price I got was from AAA (who knew they did windshields?) for around $700 for OEM glass installed in my garage. Make sure they order the molding kit as well, they will have to cut the old glass out.
