Suggestion

Due to force of habit, I have been checking prices on a regular basis (Ebay, Autotrader) and it seems that prices have not dropped since March, and may have gone back up.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Obviously with the dwindling economy in the U.S., the prices of the 996 have dropped. This is good for buyers, not so good for sellers. What are your opinions as far as when we will begin to see stabilization / increase in asking prices? Do you think it will occur once the economy as a whole has stabilized, or further into the future? Once I get back from Iraq, I will purchase a 996, and I'd imagine it will still be a buyer's market come the end of '09, I guess i just wanted some thoughts. And for those interested, really hooked on MY02...meaningful year to me and also the same year the 3.6 was introduced. Now I just have to find "the one."

POST 2Original post

I think you'll be able to find "the one" at the end of 2009 for a good price. The drop in 996 prices is partly due to the economy, but also due to the fact that Porsche made many more 996s than they did 993s. The 996 doesn't offer the same level of exclusivity - there are more of them out there. Additionally, the air-cooled 993 is perceived by many (rightly or wrongly) to be the last "real" Porsche 911. As a result, prices are higher. I don't think the 996 will hold prices like that, ever. I think your best approach is just to find the one you like, buy it and enjoy it. Don't worry about prices dropping.

POST 3Original post

Perhaps there is an inverse relation to the fact that Porsche keeps increasing the price of repalcement engines and other parts. And you can count on Porsche continuing to raise these prices.

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 6719353

Right, that means it will get to a point where it will be cheaper to just buy a 2nd 996 for spare parts then a replacement engine.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 6719353

And you can count on a team that pushes the development of superior replacement internal engine parts that did not originate from Porsche.. The goal is to only buy gasket sets and rear main seals from Porsche in the future.. We are 50% there now!

my 02 cab with 28k miles in 9.5/10 condition is listed for $34k. I have not had a single call or email about it.... not even a lowball offer.

POST 11Original post

Hello, IMHO, the market has bottomed out for now, and will probably go down again in the late fall, early winter. I started looking for a car back in December 08. I bought mine in March 09. Due to force of habit, I have been checking prices on a regular basis (Ebay, Autotrader) and it seems that prices have not dropped since March, and may have gone back up. I guess that is to be expected as it is now Cabriolet and sports car weather. Good luck, Barry

the big price drop normally comes after summer.

POST 13Original post

I think this is kind of like asking when is the right time to buy a home. Truthfully the answer is "whenever you are ready". When you can afford it, buy the best car, for the best price you can find, and don't look back. When you're behind the wheel, it won't matter if prices go up, down, or sideways...

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the kind words, I'm pretty freaking excited! The time away is all worth it if you get to come home to a 996 =) I understand the availabiliy of 996's are more prevalent than that of it's older, air-cooled brethren, I guess I was just wondering if this was the lowest we'll see the 996 market subside or if it will continue to do so into the near future. Either way, it's happening! Your cab is really gorgeous, and I also like the wheels, but your asking price is a bit above what I'm looking to spend, and "the one" will be either white, black, or red...but with that mileage it's a good price!

POST 19Original post

I stopped thinking or being concerned about the whole thing. I've decided no one is gonna take advantage and rob me of my car, so I'm keeping it. People in general, control most of all situations. The more we all talk about how bad the prices have dropped, the more it bugs us and it sticks in our heads. So when some of us have to sell our 996's, we automatically think that they are not worth that much anymore, and every seller among us starts off asking at a slightly lower price....and it's all a chain reaction. Buyers keep pushing, sellers keep backing...... We should all go on a major strike! No more 996's for sale!!!

Something about a black/black cab six speed sets it apart. Not sure if what I'll end up going for, as black cars have always been the hardest to keep clean-looking, in my experience...and they say everything is bigger in Texas...especially the BUGS! How has the Savanna interior treated you?

POST 21Original post

I have owned a lot of black cars. I dropped my black 996 off for warranty work yesterday and am driving a black Audi A8 as a loaner (beautiful interior btw, cinnamon leather/ black carpeting/dash and wood/aluminum, ridiculously plush). There's a black benz in the garage as well. Black cars find me! If you're obsessive compulsive like myself, you will need to add a detailing products line item to your tax returns, and budget plenty of time to wash and dry. Otherwise they are gorgeous, age very well, and are never as dirty as you think they are! Prices are lowest in the winters in a standard year, and in real production models like the modern 911s, prices only go down as a general trend before finding some sort of bottom, where sellers feel as cosmos expressed above, that anything lower would be an affront to their emotional investment in the vehicle. Things moved down a lot faster in the past 12 months due to distress, both distressed sellers whose employment , income, or credit was impacted by the crunch thereby necessitating a sale or trade at any price, and distressed dealers who couldn't afford to keep the cars on the lots for so long. Much of that seems to have eased, but the general trend is downward. Even at 20% higher prices, these cars are a steal, so don't worry, either way you'll get the car you want for money you'll feel was well spent.

I have been happy with it, My seats have not seen ANY wear as they are in the garage (I have black GT3 style seats) - I am working on a black steering wheel set up, mine is fine, but I want a 3 spoke and black is easier to find..and if I stumble on some black mats for the floors I will be done... the other savanna parts dont see much wear so for me its a good combination....

Sunset has black fr&rr factory mats for $151.74. Regular dealer retail is $192.63. They have the embroidered 'Porsche' in black on black mat - it looks great.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

haha, find a high-school hom ec class and get them to do it for free! That's another reason I really want an '02, I believe the three spoke wheel came standard in all models that year, correct? That steering wheel, every time I slide into the drivers seat, just looks like it would smile at me and say "You Ready?"

POST 28Original post

Thank you for your service, it will be a very nice reward to yourself, and God knows you deserve it. I can tell you for a fact that you will love this car. Prices may continue to come down; however, the question is how much. When you get back, find that special car and enjoy the heck out of it. Life is good.
