A shallow 8 can be installed either on the outside or inside but it requires major fabrication and since the box itself is very flimsy there a lot of buzzing and such.

I have replaced the amp and all the other speakers but don't have the sub hooked up.

I ran a pair of subwoofer speaker wires from the 5 channel Alpine amp in the frunk to the sub box.

Suggestion
Did the hole you drill towards the rear allow you to use the factory mounting tab on the left side of the enclosure?

when you say that you ran the speakers in series in the sub box, did you use the factory wires going into the subs and connect your 5 channel amp to the factory sub wires in the frunk?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anyone re-used the Bose subwoofer enclosure but replaced the speaker to something better? I've seen custom installs where people make their own subwoofer enclosure, but I was thinking it would be cool to keep the stock look and just upgrade the speaker to something better. If anyone has, do you have any specs on what speaker was used and any pics on the process? Also looking for any "how to" on how to remove that subwoofer box.
Thanks
BTW... my car is a 2003 C4S.
Removing the sub box is easy, remove the two black plastic vent covers (one screw each), unscrew the long screw that's hidden inside, pull towards the front of the car, unplug the wire.
Ive been looking into this, and repurposing the box is far from easy. The cone is a wacky 4x6 affair that could never be replaced. It fires downwards and the 4 width limits what could be put there. A shallow 8 can be installed either on the outside or inside but it requires major fabrication and since the box itself is very flimsy there a lot of buzzing and such. If your car is not a cab then you need a new floor mat. And of course the Bose sub amp cant drive a real speaker.
CAI doesnt offer a sub any more, but check these guys out.

When I get my car back from winter storage I am going to investigate bolting a powered sub like the Alpine 8 under the passenger side dash.
Before you spend $$$, try stuffing your sub:

I did it (without the dynamat even) and it made a world of difference. Cost me $10.
I did the same, it helped.
The big difference came from replacing the speakers with the 5.25 Tang subwoofers. Lots of folks on here have used them in the doors, but I tried them in the sub box instead. Major difference for pretty cheap.
Note that I have an aftermarket head unit and 5-channel amp too.
I have a 2001 C2 cabriolet that had the Hifi (non Bose) system. I was doing a full replacement (double DIN head unit, 5 channel amp, Focal speakers from Rod at CAI) and wanted to add a sub. So I bought a used Bose sub box off EBay and modded it with a 6.5 JL Audio sub.
I removed the 4x6 Bose speaker and sealed the hole with plexiglass and foam sealant tape. I cut a hole in the side of the box and mounted the speaker. I ended up using a spacer ring to get the clearance I needed. The volume of the box is small and I filled it with poly fill before sealing it up.
Overall very happy with the result - surprising amount of bass coming out of that thing!
I think it should be possible to mount a shallow 8 sub in there but thats about the max. The side is not really flat and it is narrow at the top so it took some measuring to try to figure out the speaker placement.
Another opportunity for me to register my apparently minority view that the problem with the Bose system isn't the speakers; its the power amp, which is also a Bose product. I got rid of it and the head unit, replaced them with Alpine products. This involved disconnecting the rear side speakers (not enough outputs, and they add nothing) and rewiring the subwoofers in series instead of in parallel, so the resistance would match the sub output. Have someone who knows what they're doing set the crossovers, and you can get excellent sound, far beyond what is needed in a Porsche that is actually driven. Try that first and I suspect you will never get to the point of buying Focals, JBLs, etc. That was my plan. I would have been happy to upgrade the speakers. I love expensive speakers. I have quite a few of them. But they simply weren't necessary for this aplication. Bose hating can be quite irrational, in my humble opinion.
I have the same car/year and used the OEM Bose enclosure but upgraded the speakers. Upgraded to Focal 5KM 145mm 200W RMS 400W Peak speakers. They're driven by a JL Audio amp and sound great! They're a screw-in direct replacement of the stock speakers in the Bose enclosure.

This is a pretty old post but hopefully it is seen.
when you say that you ran the speakers in series in the sub box, did you use the factory wires going into the subs and connect your 5 channel amp to the factory sub wires in the frunk?
Im trying to avoid running new sub speaker wires from the frunk mounted amp to the sub enclosure.
Thanks
I'm pretty sure that's what they did and it's what I'm planning to do as a first step this week. How did you get on with yours Scott?
Did you stuff your sub box with filling? It seems to be well thought of by a bunch of people:
https://www.planet-9.com/threads/bos...tuffing.47313/
I ran a pair of subwoofer speaker wires from the 5 channel Alpine amp in the frunk to the sub box. I took a Bose subwoofer box and mounted a shallow 8 Focal sub in the side of the box. I did fill the box with Polyfil and added Dynamat inside since the walls seemed kinda thin to me.
So the first step I am thinking is simply replacing the Bose subwoofer with a better open air sub. i think the stock Bose sub runs on 2 ohm (correct me if I am wrong). anyone have experience with that upgrade? did it make a diff in bass? If that doesnt work, then i might go with adding an amp just for the sub note: i do not want to add a sub box in my truck......dont like it taking up space........ any suggestions
I just did the sub enclosure stuffing mod last weekend and have been more than happy with the improvement. The bass is much much tighter and not boomy at all. You can modulate the effect by using more or less of the acoustic stuffing material. I'd highly recommend that route first.
How did you mount the enclosure to the tunnel. My 2001 996 Cabriolet doesnt have the rivnuts for the factory Bose enclosure. It is my understanding those didnt come until 2002..
I bought the OEM rivnuts and bolts from Pelican. When I looked behind the carpet on the trans tunnel there was a five-sided hole for the rivnut so I was able to use that. Couldnt see one at the front so I had to drill a smaller hole and file it to get the rivnut to fit. Bit of a hassle but now its mounted properly. You could probably just use a self-tapping screw if it is not too long.
Thank you Bill! One more question. Did the hole you drill towards the rear allow you to use the factory mounting tab on the left side of the enclosure?
