I run 8.5' fronts with 255 tires and 15mm spacers with no rubbing at 2.5-3.0 degrees of negative camber in the front.

But that is what I am running now in Sumotomo HRZ3's.

Of course if I was just running the 1/4 it would behoove me to setup a set of 7 wide tires.

Suggestion
The widest wheel i've seen fit to a stock regular production 996 of any body style is 8.5 in the front, although technically a 9 would fit at the same offset (since most people have no trouble running a 15mm spacer upfront)

Since I know you can't be looking for JUST 1/4 mile times, and assuming the car will make a few turns here and there!: Run 8 or 8.5 up front and 11 out back on the street, any section width you want, you'll be a happy man.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Currently I am running 18" 8.5 fronts 10 backs.
Ideally I would like to run 11 wide in back to get some 335/30's on there. What would I run in the front with those rears to help mitigate some of the potential for oversteer?
My thought is to just put the 10"s up front. But I am sure the offset on the Rear wheels is too much to stick up front. (Currently the rims are Carrera III OEM 18")
What fronts came on the 2003-2004 GT2? Those had 11" rears.
TIA
Tom
I would totally like to hijack this thread and ask if there is a database somewhere of all the different wheel options that were made availible on the 996.
Good luck putting 335s on the rear. I have GT3 11" rears and 305 is the most I can get without rubbing. Even with 3 degrees of negative camber. On the front, I can fit 8.5" with 245s, 9" would probably work as well, but more than that and I rub the fender liners when turning.
Also, why are you putting on GT2 wheels? If you search, widebody offsets cause lots of problems on narrowbody cars.
As for oversteer, where are you driving that you get any oversteer? For typical street driving, you shouldn't really encounter it at all - regardless of tires. And, on the track, the car is setup to understeer.

335 won't work on that width, widest section will be 315 for an 11.
The GT3 ran 8.5 up front (235 or 245), and 11s out back on (295 or 305)
The GT2 had 8.5 up front and 12s (315) in the back

True widebodies (not stock but racecars) like the GT3 SuperCup and RSR can run up to 11 inches up front and 14 or 15 in the back, but these cars are very different from our cars, both at the suspension/hubs and with different fender layouts and widths. Without different fenders you can't do that, nor would you want to on the street.
Best,
Hans
if they are only going to be for 1/4s, you might be best off with straight 8s up front, less rolling resistance on the wheels which aren't driven! For 1/4 mile times, you need to look at a dedicated setup out back, light wheels, probably 17s, DOT slicks or straight slicks, and analyze your shift points before selecting tires. You may wind up being able to eliminate a shift or get into a better part of the powerband by running a shorter or taller RD. Slicks on a 10 inch wheel running low pressure will hook up better than street tires on any width wheel.
Since I know you can't be looking for JUST 1/4 mile times, and assuming the car will make a few turns here and there!: Run 8 or 8.5 up front and 11 out back on the street, any section width you want, you'll be a happy man. The GT3 wheels are a perfect fit. Run 295s or 305s, either will work. Then take your current wheels and buy some hoosiers for the strip!
Good luck and have fun with it!
To keep the conversation on point...
I run 8.5' fronts with 255 tires and 15mm spacers with no rubbing at 2.5-3.0 degrees of negative camber in the front.
9' and 265's or 275's fit up there but not on my setup as my coilovers have barrel shaped springs and not straight round springs like a GT3.
I think you'll find that most "regular" 996 guys tend to like a 40mm tire width split front to rear. 245/285 is very popular with people on the stock wheels. Cars with more power (GT3 and GT2) fair a bit better with more rear tire to help out with the additional power on tap. If you're going to run 305 rears on a C2 I'd suggest a 265 or 255 front tire based on my own personal experiences.
Andy
The GT3 wheels are a great idea. Readily available and wouldn't have to worry about offsets.
Never noticed the front/back split was usually 40mm. But that is what I am running now in Sumotomo HRZ3's.
Yeah the trip to the drag strip has me thinking about this. I should probably look at buying a used Crown Vic patrol car and dragging it.
The wife is starting to growl about all this drag strip talk. Might have to be a winter project.
And Dell....you are so funny when you are annoyed.
Not annoyed as much as confused
Not really back F/T like I used to but drop in from time to time to keep the 996 guys in line. Overall, a great group of guys
...now where's that drag strip sub-forum?
Sorry...I also didn't mention they're 17" wheels either cause that generally leads to more questions.
My fronts for the track are 17 x 8.5 et50 (Boxster rear wheels). with the spacers that makes the offset et35. If my stupid coilovers didn't have the barrel shaped springs there would be no need for the spacer and a 9' wheel could be squeezed in there. Dealing with what I've got the 8.5 and 255 front tire is all I can comfortably run and it works well so I went with it.
Andy
back to the original question - and trust me I have no idea why we are even talking about it.....
but for the 1/4 mile why would you ask what tires to run up front to mitigate some of the oversteer?
YOUR NOT TURNING
run rubber bands up front!!
Well, I was HOPING to come up with a running set that would be able to be driven to the strip. Of course if I was just running the 1/4 it would behoove me to setup a set of 7 wide tires.
Thanks for being so helpful though.
haha just bustin your chops a bit -
personally I have zero desire to run the 1/4 mile in this car... there are cars I would like to though...at least a couple times
last year I took the kids to see the nationals for the first time and when those big bad *** funny cars come ripping down the track and your eyes are wiggling from the sound waves.... thats pretty awesome!!
Had the pleasure a few years ago to go to Drag school at Rockingham. One of the funnest weeks of my life. Been trying to get up the cash and cahones to go do the funny car week but those boys are no joke. At least with the short rails you have a chance usually to correct if you jump on it fast enough. The top fuel funny cars are not as forgiving.
I mainly want to drag the 911 a few times to give my son bragging rights. His friends are all "A 911 couldn't possibly do a 13 1/4. I went out last week and did a few 17's with street tires, no prep and with 91 octane. I think 12's are entirely doable with the right setup.

I think mid 13's is about as fast as a 996 will go without forced induction or a shot of NO2.
I just couldn't resist, i think Cory will like this since this is the sort of motor he spends the most time with!

With a bigger tire in the back, you'll get more hook (60 foot) but a lower trap speed. Also with a 996 without forced induction or n20, you wouldn't have to worry about oversteer cause there is not enough power to break the tires loose in second or third gear. Oh and also, the bigger the tire in front would create less understeer...Try running a mickey thompson drag radial, should get you to really low 13's...
