Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I joined the Porsche ranks 3 years too soon.
I want to throw up when I see all these deals on 996's (C4S's, Aeros especially!) and know I cant get another pristine, low mileage perfect sportscar.......I paid $42k for my Aero in the day with 55k miles at the time.......and it was a Tip!!!
These cars are absolute steals!!!!!!!!! This is an understatement in all accounts!!!!!!!
P.S. - if anyone wants to trade their 996 for a 2001 4X4 4Runner with 75k miles, let me know.......
I know, I know - I feel your pain, but for me it was about 6 months too soon (I got mine last August) which is worse - if only I had waited to pull the trigger...
Oh well - I have mine and I love it... and I always fight the urge to check the AutoTrader... (I used to do it for giggles, but it's not fun anymore...)

You guys are taking the wrong perspective on this. I paid what I paid 3 years ago. It was a decent price for that time and I leave it at that. Now I am focused on the fact that Boxsters are so cheap that building up a Boxster "spec" racer may be in my future. I have always wanted to go club racing, and now there is chance to do it affordably in something other than a 944 (no offense to you 944 owners, they just aren't for me personally).
There is no point in kicking yourself in the *** after you have purchased you car. You must place things into perspective, what I mean is that you are fortunate to own a 911, a car that is difficult to get bored of. You have to look at from a point of view that you will have this car for many years; hence, the price of other cars, in my opinion, is irrelevant.
That's also the reason for the decidedly younger crowd this and the other boards have moved to. There are tons of 20 somethings driving 996's these days.
What's wrong with that? It's for whom the car was originally available to in the early 1970s when new car prices were last approachable. I always bemoaned the aging, midlife-crisis Pcar driver. I'll take an excited, 20-something driver getting into his first Pcar with a gigantic smile plastered on his face any day of the year. Hell, I was in my late 20s when I got my first Porsche....alas it's a decade ago now.
My brother picked up his first, a 914-6 back in 75 when he was 18 then a 70 911S a few months later right out of High School while working for Grumman.
Maintenance was the killer and he ended up as an apprentice for a local german mechanic rebuilding motors and rust repair on three year old 911's & before opening his own shop in Long Island.
At least the 996's don't rust out at the sight of rain...

My point was that I could of bought a 996 now with half the miles for half the price!!!!
HEHE
I was 27 with my 996.
Ouch!
Great story and he is lucky he gets to do what he likes
Well his career with the shop did not end well, spent way too much time managing employees and fixing their mistakes to keep customers happy. A few years later during a holiday break the place was burgurlaized with most of his tools, parts and a few customer cars stolen/vandalized. (inside job but had no proof)
Aftter that, he threw in the towel and went into mechanical engineering for a defense company in the Southwest and keeping the P-car as a hobby.

I agree, prices have really taken a beating. I bought my car 2 years back, for $39k. Could have been worse, I could have paid $75k for it in 2000!
My first new car was a 1987 Acura Integra LS. I paid $12k for it. After finance charges, 4 years later, I wound up paying close to $20k (love those 80's interest rates). Sold it after 7 years for $4,500. I'll NEVER buy another new car!
Cars are the worst investment (unless you are buying a classic as an investment)!
ditto here. I have no regrets with the price that I paid, or the money that I've invested in mods.
I love my car and don't care what the external valuation is. I have a great car and that's all that matters.
i was late 20s as well, last gasp late, bought in 07 before the market really snapped on us for what I really felt was a great deal at the time. CPO, all my options, etc, half off a high 80s sticker.
I don't have too many regrets, my car has been reliable, the CPO paid for itself on the cats alone, and I've had a great run. I'm not sure I can ever sell it given the loss I would take, just couldn't make the argument, but the deals right now are crazy. Can I really have two of these things?
I also feel like if I had to do it right now a turbo (if replacing) or gt3 (if adding) would be the only 996es for me. Then I look at 06+ C4S prices which line up with the older cars, and i think thats the way to go if buying today. Then I realize prices aren't going any which way but down, and that this will be a long cold winter for the late 06 997 lease returns (I'm set on a C4 or C4S 997 right now, lets see how things pan out).
That was my first new car also, only mine was a 1988. Fun car. I bought an Acura Legend after that in '93 which I loved, and that was the last new car I bought (a left over model year car). I love letting someone else take the initial depreciation hit!
I paid $42K two years ago for my car, and that was a good deal . I don't feel bad about what has happened to the prices of our cars. It's been the same for all cars.
It'll be worse when the newbies find out how much it costs the engines... then they will quickly dump the cars at very low prices to get out of owning one.
I was 18 and had a 1957 356, just pristine. With the bumper guards and cross members, British Racing Green with tan interior, completely stock. One day, ran it too hard and broke the crankshaft. The repair cost more than the cost of the car ($1300). Sold it to the mechanic. But while I had it (2years) I had a smile on my face all the time.....The best of days. I now have a '04 C4S Cab and bought it 3 years ago, with 2K miles on it, and bought it for a fortune! I absolutley love the car, living in So Cal with the top down most of the time, winter and summer. Thought about selling it, but to buy what? There is not a car, in my opinion, better than a P car that you can buy for the same money that I could sell it for.
I went to a spur-of-the-moment track event today. So true!
My track car wasn't ready, so I took the C4 - previously, I'd only had it on the track in the rain (which was awesome in itself) - and I was really impressed. I was hanging with a lot of cars with r-compound tires and having a blast (until I corded my PS2s... time for some new ones.)
But, of course, I'm not saying anything that you guys don't know. Whatever your "point-of-entry" - you probably think you have a pretty cool car. Well, you do!
AWE - here's the pity party..
I paid too much and got too little.....
then again, I paid what was fair and have had the time of my life !!
If I had to do it again, I might not have ever done it, so I did...no regrets...
I went to 9 funerals from sept 07' to april 08' I bought the car in may 08'..... I said I am not going to have dreamed about this for 28 years and never reached it.....life is short, you cant get back the time you spent NOT following your dreams - so it cost money..... big damn deal!!!
BTW
when someone says "Time is Money"
I always reply - "No, it isn't"
when they ask me to explain, I say "If time were money, I could save it in the bank, and take it out to use it later when I needed it"
Welcome to the party pal !!
my home lost about 100K in a year and I bought it cheap in foreclosure.....do I really care?? NO I don't feel it difference when I live in my house....and when I drive my P-car I don't feel that it is worth "NOTHING"..... I just stopped handwashing it !! Screw that cheap piece of german S...t no more handwash for you...from now on the 5 dollar brush was....and don't think I throw in an extra 2 bucks for wax.
I try not to think about it. Even being optimistic my car is worth mid 20's now so I've lost almost 10K in less than 2 years. I have fun in my car every time I drive it. Hopefully, it will last until I can get a GT3.
Guys, I dont own a 996 anymore.
My point was, now you can get a very, very, I mean very, nice example of one for the price of a new tin-can, Japanese or Korean econocar.
I think about this because my "beater" is out of commision and the niceness of the 996 over my '87 makes me want another badly at these current prices.....
Im a little jealous of you guys........
We had an idiot at work put acetone on his road rash after someone told him it would sterilize the area...........needless to say, he was an idiot.......
It's very easy:
I own a Porsche 911. I've dreamed about this car since I went to Zuffenhausen at 15 years old. Again, I have a 911!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Yes, I'm happy)
