Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello fellow 996 enthusiasts!
I've been unusually busy with 996.2 headlight retrofits so far this year. Normally that slows down during the spring and summer months because nobody wants to have their 996 parked when the weather is nice.
This is great for me but unfortunately has also slowed down my efforts to come up with other 996 lighting upgrades, something that some of you had encouraged me to do after the LED taillight bulb kit.
One of the things I've been working on is offering blinking side markers. This is, of course, a misnomer as they are either side markers or blinkers.
For those of you that did not know: The US spec 996 has side markers, which is different from almost all other geographic markets, which have blinkers. Same fixture, just programmed differently to comply with US DOT regulations.
Not only do I like the blinker function better, I believe it is also safer, because when looking at a 996 from the side, you can't really see the front blinkers very well.
So the first thing I did is starting from the last 996.2 retrofit I did, is adapt the wiring harness to include the necessary wiring to be able to route to your side markers to give them blinker functionality
I will soon be offering aftermarket LED side markers with custom wiring that simply plug right into these modified retrofitted headlights. There will be a clear, smoked, and amber version, which will all light up amber when in use.
I will also offer a solid and a sequential or "chasing" version of these.
For those of you that do not have your headlight retrofitted by me, and are still interested in this functionality, I am working on a DIY kit that will include instructions and all necessary materials to tie into your car's headlight harness.
I want to make this as simple and non-invasive as possible so almost anybody could do this. This option is still a month or two out.
For those of you that have access to a Durametric diagnostic tool, there apparently is a way to reprogram the function as well. In that case I'm still your man to get upgrades LED side markers/blinkers!
There are other lighting related things I'm working on as well, that I will elaborate on when I'm a bit closer to having something to offer.
Here's a quick preview of what I'm talking about

Looks awesome! I was just telling my brother-in-law that after we retrofit your headlights/taillights, I'll need to do something about the side markers, perfect timing! Will these work with a 996.1 also?
Awesome!
The side markers and their wiring is identical in all 986 & 996 cars. Tying into the headlight harness will of course be a little different, but the method would be very similar.
I had to look this up, but this is the answer I got:
Porsche 996 (19992005 911)
shares its side markers with the
986 generation Boxster
(19972004).
Porsche 987 (20052012 Boxster/Cayman)
shares its side markers with the
997 generation 911
(20052013).

Does anyone know the
specific steps
to make this change for the 996 via the PIWIS III software? I have seen some discussions for newer generation cars but not the 996.
Back in the day we got the side markers to blink by wiring them into the headlight/turn signal circuit.
That said, this looks like a cool way to get new headlights and turn signals (and tail lights?).
Out of curiosity, will it still function as a marker?
Love your work. I'm still waiting to put my headlights together. I have a question, but I'll email you shortly.
Take care!
There is an old DIY mod that had the markers flash either on or off, I presumed this would be a similar mod to that but that required a relay, whereas this connects them to the signal in the headlight?
I just received the materials for the PnP harness to make these blinking side markers work even if you didn't have your headlights retrofitted by me!
I came up with a 100% Plug-and-Play solution: A small harness that connects between your car's headlight receptacle and your headlight!
I am recording a how-to video showing how to pop out the receptacle in your headlight bracket, and replace it with my PnP harness.
No cutting, splicing or re-wiring, and it can be brought back to stock in minutes without any trace!
The picture only shows one harness, but you will of course receive two, one for each side.
I have added the harness as an option to the web site:

For now, I have only listed the 996.2 version; If there is enough interest, I can make a PnP harness for the 996.1/986 as well.
I made the mod this weekend. Jumped from the marker ground to the blinkers power at the harness. It was not easy. The second one was not as difficult after the learning curve of the first one. Getting the harness out of that forsaken bracket was the killer. A plug and play version is a wonderfully idea. About one day late for me.
There is a product called the blinker genie that allows the single trigger side markers to function as park and turn. May be something to incorporate into your design?
i actually just did this on my 996.1 with a pair of relays per side as the genie was too expensive to get to canada.
Side markers fully function as turn and park.
Only oddity is that they blink opposite the turn signal when parks are on. I was able to do all of the connections in the frunk at the headlight harness body-side socket connectors. This would not be a project for someone with no wiring experience.
Had a plug&play harness been available I would've definitely preferred that route!
The blinker genie looks small and could easily be incorporated into your harness for plug&play.
I don't have any actual experience with it but came across it when I was researching the project.
I'm also offering a PnP harness for the 996.1/986 folks now. It's an option you can pick when ordering the side markers!
