Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Precisely why I bought a car with recently replaced engine.
Leading evidence: 'Replace engine' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'some type of engine "dirt"' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace engine' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
If it was due to some type of engine "dirt" then it is highly likely you would have had another lifter failure on that side of the engine at a later date.

Suggestion
Personally my next weekend car will be a 996 coupe of some sort and I'm looking for one with a busted motor so I can replace the engine myself.

Suggestion
Also whenever there is a lifter failure Porsche recommends replacing all the lifters on the side of the engine with the failure.

Would most of you have replaced the whole bank in this instance?
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've had my '04 coupe for a year now, and was just commenting on how I think I got a good one this time. (I had problems with my '01 cab).
I pulled out of a shopping center rather aggressively to get to the other side of the road and my check engine light went on. It was flashing at first, then went solid. There was also a message on the display to bring it to service ASAP.
I was fortunately only 5 miles from the dealership. The car had no power, especially above 3k rpm and would vibrate at idle. The dealer checked it out right away. When they started it up, the CEL was not lit. After inspecting it, they said that cylinder 4 had a bad coil, or a bad lifter. Since it was 5pm, they said they'd call me in the morning.
It was a bad lifter on cylinder 4. The original warranty expired in Dec. but I purchased the major systems coverage from Warranty Direct. WD will cover the big labor bill and the one bad lifter. The dealer says the Porsche recommends that while they're in there, I should replace the whole bank of lifters. This will cost me $720. Of course without WD the job would be about 2.5-3k. After some thought I said to go ahead, even though WD would cover any future lifter problems on a per episode basis.
Would most of you have replaced the whole bank in this instance?
The problem is you don't know why the lifter failed. If it was due to some type of engine "dirt" then it is highly likely you would have had another lifter failure on that side of the engine at a later date. Paying for the other lifters was good preventative maintenance IMO. Also whenever there is a lifter failure Porsche recommends replacing all the lifters on the side of the engine with the failure.
good point pilot, but then why isn't whole bank replacement covered? I wonder if Porsche cpo would cover full side replacement? Personally, if there is a full two years left, I would not replace the rest, then rid myself of car right before it ended.
Porsche CPO probably would have covered the whole bank but the after market warranty did not; at least that is the way I read Z-man's post. Normal new car Porsche warranty would definitely have covered the whole bank.
Would you seriously get rid of the car just because you didn't want to spend $720 on lifters? That's ludicrous if you have a nice car.
NO, not just for that problem in particular, but because I like to sleep soundly at night without worrying if engine is going to crap out through no fault of my own. Precisely why I bought a car with recently replaced engine. As you know the M96 has had a few issues, his not being a common one, as far as I have heard.
I understand WD's POV. The other lifters on that side work. The thing that annoys me is that these type of things always seem to happen right after the original warranty runs out.
WD already paid for itself pretty much with the first claim. The car is covered till 12/2011.
Z-Man,
There is no doubt that the timing is a bummer but at least you had the after market warranty to cover the labor cost.
Hughie,
the best buys on these cars are the ones with Porsche rebuilt or new engine's good for you for getting one of those. Personally my next weekend car will be a 996 coupe of some sort and I'm looking for one with a busted motor so I can replace the engine myself. I sold my 964 C4 last year and I really have the itch. Gotta pay off the wife's new Passat 3.6 wagon first
I was originally thinking about trying to build up a 3.7 Liter silsleeve motor from Autofarm in the UK but the low US Dollar squashed that idea. Now I'm pondering Nickies from LN engineering. They recently starting doing aluminum replacement sleeves in 986/996 engines. If not there is always the dealer re-maned engines which seem to be quite good. Man I can't wait to get that Passat paid off....
Pilot, don't forget to get the extended warranty for that VW of yours. I've heard those 3.6s are having all kinds of problems. Besides, the turbo on my VW crapped out at 186,000 miles. Where's my warranty paperwork?
Stop crying about your beater. How many trees have to fall on that car before you bury it?
Besides you know full well I've already h ad the damn intermediate shaft failure in my Passat. Low blow
