I just installed a B&M short shifter and, after only 100 miles or so, I can tell you that it's GREAT.

From anyone who's done a DYI, how do you adjust the cables?

Suggestion
I think unless you have done an install before, it would be difficult to disconnect the cables from the shifter itself.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys:
I just installed a B&M short shifter and, after only 100 miles or so, I can tell you that it's GREAT. Shifting from second to third is SO much easier. And as to all the gears, it reduces the movement BIG TIME. It also gives you a hard "back" to hit when you shift, so you really feel "locked in."
I had heard all of this before I purchased, but never actually experienced it. Now that I have, I can say from [limited] experience that it's a great mod. For $200 fron Brandywine plus another $175 to install, its about as much bang for the buck as you will ever get (performance wise) in a modification. I highly recommend.
thx for your post. i was actually looking to install one today, and your post pushed me over the edge.
i'm sure i'll enjoy it as much as you.

Thx from me too. I actually just bought one last night, feeling even better about my purchase. From anyone who's done a DYI, how do you adjust the cables?
Tom
i would encourage you guys to try the install yourselves, it's quite simple. even if you're all-thumbs, it should take less than 2-hrs. the biggest boon to a diy, is that you can tweek the linkages at a later time, if need be, without revisiting your mechanic for yet another expenditure...
If you follow the B&M instructions they are excellent - except that they don't tell you to mark the cables before removing them. Some people use masking tape and others count the threads. Either way if you should not need any adjustment if you put them back as they were.
A second more difficult option is to pop off the cable ends (without removing the cable connection).
I did it the Porsche way and did not remove the cables from the connectors. Took a bit more time and did not like it since there was no advangate. Then did another B&M install with the shift link and did it the Porsche way again. Hard for my old eyes to see the threads to count them, but we usually have some younger eyes around. If no young eyes are around I would do it the Porsche way.
I have had mine (B&M also from Brandywine) in for about a month and it is great. Very positive shifts and it actually seems to go into the gears easier than stock (even 1st and R). I did the install myself, took a little over an hour with my 8 year-old helping a lot.
I just marked the cables with piece of masking tape and have had no problems. I think unless you have done an install before, it would be difficult to disconnect the cables from the shifter itself. The feel is definitely "notchier" than stock, but I really prefer that. It definitely seems like more of a sports car now.
OT: I also installed the PSE a few weeks ago. Easy install, but it is much louder than the stock (99MY, which I understand is quieter than later models.) My 8 year old also helped with this and absolutely loves the new sound. Upon firing her up after the install his comment was: "WOW, this sounds just like a race car now!
) I may be switching to a GHL and sell the PSE; although, I am finding I am getting more used to it as time goes by.
krisd: I found that the PSE mellows out a little over time (in my former 04 Targa); right after the install it scared me it was so loud and rough sounding, but I think it breaks in and will sound better after maybe a month of regular driving.
Jim,
Thanks for the input, I am planning to give it some time. I am very fortunate in that my daily commute has some great mountain roads where the sound is not an issue and makes the drive much more fun. It is just in the residential areas and when I would like to use the phone I would like it quieter. I may end up taking a shot at hooking up the switch. I also think my wife would like it quieter on the days she uses it.
Kris
I am going to give it a try on my own. I have the instructions from B&M and will mark the cables with tape...
I am all thumbs but figure I can do it.
Anything else I need to know?
Robert
Did it today...1.5 hours and a piece of cake!
Thanks for the advice..........I love it! It makes you be a little more forceful or precise on your shifting...
Great mod for the price per wow factor.
