Are there standard features on the 2001 that were options on the 1999? For instance, is the 3 spoke wheel standard on the '01? I seem to see most '99's have the 4 spoke and many but not all '01's have the 3 spoke. Is PSM standard on 2001's, I believe it wasn't available in '99 is that correct? The hp difference of 4hp should be insignificant but is there any noticeable difference in other areas between the 2 cars? Many thanks....

Alex, I had a 99 and now a 2001 996. Just a couple things I noticed, the headliner was a very thin vinyl in 99 compared with a thick suede-like material in 01. Much nicer. The plastic materials on the dash were changed and improved in 01 as well. Not much noticeable power difference. I'm sure there are more, but those were very noticeable ones to me.

I have a 2001, so I can tell you that the 3-spoke wheel and PSM were still options in 2001. Interior plastic is higher quality in 2001s. All 2001s have clear front and rear signal lights, whereas only late 99's do. Also, 2001s have cupholders in the dash. They's not that great and can be retrofitted to a 99. 2001 was the first year of the remote front hood opening feature on the key-head.
