Even though both cars are still under warranty, I wouldn't want to buy a car and then have to have it repaired a few weeks later.

My total time driving 911s is about 15 minutes, so I realize that this is quite likely an inexperienced driver issue.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I test drove an '02 C4S and an '03 C2. Both cars were really impressive except for their gearboxs. In both cars I had to hunt for third gear. I'm accustomed to shifting well defined gates, and that wasn't the case in either car for the 3rd gear. It wasn't too bad in the '03 but it was really pronounced in the '02. Now the '02 had a rebuilt engine because of an RMS leak and I'm not sure whether that had anything to do with the sloppy third gear, but the '03 didn't have any reported serious mechanical problems. Is this normal for a 996 or are both of these cars exceptions to the rule? Even though both cars are still under warranty, I wouldn't want to buy a car and then have to have it repaired a few weeks later. Thanks in advance for your help.

POST 2Original post

Don't hunt for it, just go up from 2nd, it will drop right into 3rd.

POST 3Original post

I've got an 04. I don't notice anything abnormal about shifting into 3rd gear. I would say there must be something wrong with the ones you test drove.

POST 4Original post

I have an 02 C4S and there is no problem shifting into third. It is a very natural movement - to me it kinda wants to go there. Maybe I'm just used to it but I can't see the shifting being a detriment for this car. Could be something wrong with the car??

POST 6Original post

My 99 shifts with no problem. 2nd to 3rd no problem. 4th to 3rd no problem. Maybe your trying to hard?

POST 7Original post

Sounds like acquired technique . Just gently push forward with your open hand facing forward.

POST 8Original post

I have an 02 C4S. Try this exercise on the car you're testing. Leave the gear in neutral. Without exerting any effort to either side, push the lever straight up. It should go straight into third with no hitch. Back to neutral. Now do the same thing, but down. It should go straight into 4th. The shifter is normally set such that it sits between 3rd and 4th, and requires a firm push sideways left or right to go into 1st/2nd or 5th/6th On the road or on the track, it's pretty much the same thing. From second, bring the lever up into neutral, give it the slightest of pause to let the lever snap itself into the middle, then straight up. Unless you're ham fisted or there's something wrong with the shifter, it should slide right into 3rd. Same technique if you're downshifting 5th to 4th. It may take some getting used to, I guess, but if you're used to it that pause is almost non-existent.

POST 9Original post

When I first started driving my newly acquired '01 C4 last month I initially had some discomfort with third gear but as some have stated earlier don't try so hard. First and second is slightly over to the left and third is straight ahead. After a bit of driving it becomes natural.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys: Thanks. My total time driving 911s is about 15 minutes, so I realize that this is quite likely an inexperienced driver issue. I'm presently driving a six speed Audi TT and I've driven manuals for years. On the six speed TT, the gear shift wants to naturally rest in the 3rd / 4th gear slot, and you have to push hard either left or right to get it into the 1/2 or 5/6 slot. So I'm accustomed to this action. Palting - Thanks. I'll try your exercise.
