Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I seem to be leaking a little oil from the vario cam cover/valve cover. I think that's what it is. On the passengers side a drop here and there after it's been parked. Car is an 99 996 with only 39k on it. The rear main seal has been replaced before with the clutch. Now this one is leaking. How much does this leak cost to fix? I think I read something about the leaking from the bolts but not sure if that's correct information. Is this a DIY fix cause I do work on cars a little and have rebuilt the top ends on some 944 turbo cars.

POST 2Original post

Be sure to trace the source of the leak. Leaks can be tricky. Could also be an engine plug. Had the same problem on mine. Simple fix. Go see an indy...plugs are about $15-30...depending on which one. C.

POST 3Original post

If there just a few drops after driving the car if could also be the spark plug tube o-rings. My 99 did this at about 30K miles. I had all the o-rings and plugs changed at the same time, not horribly expensive.

POST 4Original post

Often, snugging up the 2 bolts on the covers eliminates the leak. Plugs can be found for your car under $8 and you can change them in an hour yourself. When you change them, insert your finger in the slot to see if there is excess oil. If so, pick up new O rings from the dealer and pull the plastic sleeve and replace the O rings for that cylinder.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the input I will take a look at those bolts and the plugs.

Looks like the O rings are leaking. Any write up on how to replace them?
