No question about it, replace the mufflers with aftermarket ($1000 or so will get you much better than stock 3.4 cans + that sound!!).

As another option buy used mufflers if you like to stay with factory original.

Quick question to fellow Porsche owners: I have a 2001 996 Cab which has deteriorated mufflers. If I have to replace them anyway, do you recommend I upgrade to somethings else? Screw the dealer!! No question about it, replace the mufflers with aftermarket ($1000 or so will get you much better than stock 3.4 cans + that sound!!). If you can swing it get PSE mufflers. As another option buy used mufflers if you like to stay with factory original. Many go/are on sale for very little ($100-250 range) from those that switch to aftermarket (youtube has lots of those sounclips).
