Suggestion

I actually didn't mind the head unit (I wanted my mods to look stock in my former Boxster S and I liked the removable faceplate -- My Targa has Bose), and I think that you can get great sound by keeping head unit but changing amps, speakers and wiring.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2000 996 with the upgraded sound system. Are the speakers and amplifier designed by Bose and if so, does this mean the speakers are rated differently from others? I remember something about Bose systems running their speakers at 2 Ohm rating versus the common 4 Ohm rating. If I want to upgrade my speakers with aftermarket speakers, do I need to rip out the entire system or can I find aftermarket speakers that are compatible with the Bose amp?

POST 2Original post

The bose system was not available on the MY2000. Most likely you have the Hi/Fi factory option. There are lots of threads on audio upgrades. The short version of the story: 1. Amp is horrible....replace it. 2. Speakers are horrible....replace them 3. Head unit is bad...for best result replace but you could work with it if you really want to. 4. There are a couple of options for a true sub The route you choose will depend on how factory looking you want the ending set up. There are some great looking systems on this board (unfortunately I haven't heard them). Do some searches to see what has been done. Also Rod Birch at http://www.caraudioinnovations.com/ is very familiar with Porsche's and audio. Check out his services and ideas.

I actually didn't mind the head unit (I wanted my mods to look stock in my former Boxster S and I liked the removable faceplate -- My Targa has Bose), and I think that you can get great sound by keeping head unit but changing amps, speakers and wiring. By the way, I still have the amp (and I think speakers) out of my old Boxster S that I could get rid of very inexpensively.

POST 4Original post

you can get an adapter from bekker to give it pre amp outs and then swap out the amp and speakers and you're in business-

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the inputs. That's exactly what I needed to know. Knowing that I can get an adapter from Becker for pre-outs helps a lot.
