Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I understand that Porsche has replaced a number of systems due to spills.
Leading evidence: 'Replace number of systems due' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace number of systems due' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anyone reading my posts over the last few months as I have tried to decide what Porsche to buy to replace my 993C4S knows Ive flip-flopped worse than a certain well known political figure!
After looking at Boxsters, cheap 996s, or another 993 C4S I have finally decided once and for all (trumpet blaring..) to buy a 996. I kept looking at other alternatives yet kept coming back to the 996. I even had a deal worked out on a Boxster S but after listening to me comparing the car to a 911 my wife said, Enough is enough! You wont be happy in anything less than a 911. Just shut up and get one! Smart woman.thats why I married her.
I believe that I have read on this forum that a change was made in 2002 with regards to higher quality interior materials and minor enhancements that improve the overall quality and feel of the car. Is this true? If there is a large difference between 2002 and 2001 Ill go for the 02 model. If not, that certainly opens up the field because there are literally thousands of 01 models coming off lease over the next few months at spectacular prices. Does anyone have any insight or first hand knowledge of the differences between an 01 and 02 coupe?
Bill,
Send me an email. Yes there were significant changes to '02. I have the '02 model brochure that describes the differences. I can send the information to you when I get home this evening.

Here you go. I found one of my prior posts..
From the sales brochure: ...headlight system derived from the 911 Turbo. More discreet is the careful reshaping of the front and rear fenders, bumpers and air dam. The result is 25% less lift in the front and 40% less lift at the rear for improved high speed stability.... Reinforcements to the body structure have resulted in a 25% increase in torsional rigidity for crisper response and enhanced agility. The standard 17" wheels weigh almost eight pounds less than the previous design, while the optional 18" wheels are lighter by over 24 pounds. The front air ducts have been reshaped to increase the flow of cooling air to the radiators by 15%"
You also get 20 more HP, a glove box, better cup holders and a glass rear window in the cab. I test drove a number of cars and spent a few $$ more for an '02. You could definitely tell the difference when you drive them back to back.
Yea, those cup holders are something special. So special that most dealers advise people not to use them because they are situated right over the radio. I understand that Porsche has replaced a number of systems due to spills. In the 997, they were moved to the right and are incorporated into an area above the glovebox. Hmmmm, now that I think about it, maybe that's why I should get a 997...
The 02 have increased dispalcement and power, different headlights and some other cosmetic changes. Interior build quality seems to have been improved as well, not 100% sure about that. But the 02-04's are also heavier. Most of all I think the engine sound is better.
The 3.4l have ****ty engine noise. Coming myself from 993 ranks with a special sport exhaust, I miss that a lot. If you can, my best 996 advice is PSE with dashboard switch, for me that is the killer app.
Good luck in your search.
I agree with everyone here, and say if you can afford it definitely go with a 02 3.6L 911, but don't be timid about flip-flopping, after all it is too IMPORTANT of a decision for you to be fool-heartedly sticking to your initial impressions, it's a sign of a thinking mind.
Get the 2002 over an earlier year. The 3.6l has better torque (more and lower in the RPM band) and horsepower (320 vs. 300). While the 2002 is about 50 pounds heavier than the earlier car, the HP and torque improvements more than offset the weight increase. The 2002 also has better aerodynamics and a stiffer body structure than the earlier cars.
The '02 is much improved over the earlier 996's. My '99 had rattles & squeeks, cooling issues, instability above 130mph, cheaper interior, Boxster headlights, black rear bumperettes, less power, etc. All redisigned and improved in the later cars and well worth the extra money. I liked my old car, but I'd never buy one over an '02.
