After writing my last reply, I checked the outside temp.(42 degrees F) and decided to go for a 24 mile loop in southern Maine on a 2 lane back road at varying posted speeds(25 mph to 45 mph).
Leading evidence: 'Check outside temp.(42 degrees f) and decided' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check outside temp.(42 degrees f) and decided' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Since I started the winter at 7/32" I will run them out and buy a new set for next winter.

Suggestion
You should be fine if there is no snow or ice, temps 50 and up, on summer tires , so long as you don't intend to set speed records..
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This is the first time I went with the Summer tires/Winter tires. I was looking at the weather for the next 10 days and temps seem to be rising. Question for the VA/DC/MD peeps, is this a good time to switch to summer rubber as the temps seem to be in the 50s and 60s constantly.
I took the car out after a few weeks for a nice meet and run today. Having the car in storage and keeping the Summer tires on I was a little weary. The back swiveled side to side a little on the PS2's but not tooo bad (
)....
If it's your daily then I'd keep the winters on for a tad bit longer otherwise you should be ok.
IIRC, summer tires start to lose grip below 55 degrees. OTOH, I've been going stir crazy here in OH, and actually took my somewhat worn Pilot Sport Cups out with temps in the teens. Dry grip was actually decent. There was still a thin layer of snow/ice on my driveway though, and had to go slow and work it a bit. You should be fine if there is no snow or ice, temps 50 and up, on summer tires , so long as you don't intend to set speed records..
I have taken my 911 out whenever the temps hit 40 degrees this winter(on summer tires) and have not had any issues with grip or cornering once. No doubt that snow or ice on the road would be different, but I was able to enjoy spirited driving off and on all winter on summer tires.
It's only necessary if you intend to drive in the snow. Summer tires lose their grip at temperatures below 40, but all that means is that you have to take it a little easier when it gets that cold.
I typically wait until the end of March but, I am quite a bit further north than you .... even though the summer tires do not have as much grip below 50 degrees so, long as there is no precipitation when it is on the chilly side and you exercise some common sense you should be fine
You might want to give it another 2 or 3 weeks just to be safe. Here in NJ I usually wait until the first week of April before I take off the winter tires. After that the risk of any snow is gone.
I will probably leave my winter tires on a bit longer this year though. Blizzaks are only good for snow down to 6/32" tread. After that they are just average all seasons down to 4/32". Since I started the winter at 7/32" I will run them out and buy a new set for next winter. I probably won't put the summer tires on until June when it really gets hot.
I have yet switched out seasonal tires on this car. But if I did so, I would switch when I thought there was to be no more snow nor cold rain near freezing temps.
Luck, or you weren't driving very hard. At 40 degrees F, you are right on the margin for fresh summer performance tires, and below it for seasoned ones. Below that temperature (or thereabouts), they become a radically different tire and quite suddenly. Not a matter of opinion, I'm afraid. You can dial back your driving to manage the risk to a certain extent, but it's irresponsible and untrue to say that temperature doesn't matter. It does.
I didn't say temp.. didn't matter, only that I have had no issues with my 'well seasoned' summer tires in temps. @ 40 degrees this winter while driving. It's not my opinion, but my actual driving experience that has shown me that my tires haven't been comprimised because I just have not had any sudden changes in handling or lack of grip.
Wasn't trying to be a jerk, but I feel strongly that this is a safety issue. I'd suggest finding an empty parking lot or something like that, and really driving it. Push it hard into a turn. Panic brake. I guarantee you that you will find a considerable loss of margin. More than considerable. If you disagree, it can only be because your definition of 'spirited driving' is different from mine and maybe you don't know how high your car's limits are in the first place. I know what my car can do on summer tires in the summer, and maybe you don't have that benchmark. That would explain why you don't feel there has been a compromise. But I promise you there has been. The definition of 'spirited driving' is subjective, but the chemistry of high performance rubber is not. Again, sorry to be preachy, but to me driving on summer performance rubber in the cold is roughly as responsible as, say, driving on underinflated tires.
I think winter in SC might be like summer in Canada. My idea of a cold day is not getting out of the 50's, of which we have maybe 6 weeks like that here. It's 70+ degrees here today
After writing my last reply, I checked the outside temp.(42 degrees F) and decided to go for a 24 mile loop in southern Maine on a 2 lane back road at varying posted speeds(25 mph to 45 mph). I drove between 10-25 mph over the posted limits intermittantly, where traffic(or lack of traffic) allowed, and was rarely over 4k rpm, but the roads were twisty with plenty of elavation changes and the only issue I encountered was with the frost heaves in the road.I'm not disputing your belief that there is a cold weather comprimise...only that bad things haven't happened to me with temps in the high 30's or low 40'swith my summer tires. My 911's handling did not just go away nor did traction feel like I was on the edge handling wise.I am familiar with my cars limits, but I have not driven the car at 8/10ths on public roads in winter or summer. I'm not trying to be a jerk either Bruce, and appreciate your feedback.
In some countries in Europe you would be ticketed for using summer tires in the winter, especially if you are involved in any kind of any accident.
Driving with summer tires in the winter is kind of like using a cell phone while driving - we all do it and think we can handle it. But put yourself into any kind of situation requiring extreme handling and things start to fall apart.
