Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'big oil burner' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'big oil burner' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check air leakage into the cooling system' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I would also pressurize the cranckcase and remove the coolant cap and check for air leakage into the cooling system.

Suggestion · Original poster
Well, the test came back with between 17% and 19% leak down on 5 cylinders and 25% on cylinder one.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well, the test came back with between 17% and 19% leak down on 5 cylinders and 25% on cylinder one. Also, the compression was in the 220 range on the 5 cylinders and the 195 range on cylinder 1. Should I run and not wall away from this car with these numbers. Several Porsche techs said that for a road car, the difference is not that big of a deal. Is that true? Please someone give me an honest appraisal of this situation. Also, if you liked the car in all other respects, how much would this situation warrant the price to be reduced by? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

If those percentages are accurate on a fully warmed engine, walk away. Did he tell you where the pressurized air was going? Tailpipes, crankcase, intake?
Those numbers were taken on a completely cold motor that had been left to completely cool down on the rack overnight. I was not told where the air was leaking down to.
If it was my car, I would have it retested with external air pressure and find where the air is leaking from. I would also pressurize the cranckcase and remove the coolant cap and check for air leakage into the cooling system.
Your pressure is fine but he amount of leakage is not. Probably a big oil burner.
BTW: A proper leakdown test is performed on a warm engine, not a cold one. Testing a cold engine will can be the cause of the excessive leak down.
I agree with 1999's comments. The test should be performed on a warm engine. What's the point of doing a leakdown test on a cold motor and not monitoring where the air is leaking to? If you're paying for this service I'd ask them to retest at their expense. If those numbers turn out to be right there's no way I'd buy the car.
