I am trying to figure out if there is a way to tell the difference between a C2 and a C4 using the VIN.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello All, I am new here and in the market for a 1999-2003 996 C4. I am trying to figure out if there is a way to tell the difference between a C2 and a C4 using the VIN. Anyone know the specifics? Does the AWD 996's always have the "Carrera 4" badge on the back? Does it always have "Carrera 4" on the door sills? Some of the cars I am looking at have Aero kits and the badge is gone. I just want to make sure it is AWD because that is one of my requirements. Thanks

POST 2Original post

If the front wheel has an axle then it is AWD. I am sure the VIN# would provide the info also.

POST 3Original post

There are a few places Renntech has a VIN decoder. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...de=vin_decoder There is also one in the PET (see V-pages) You can download manuals here, select Catalog #21, is is at the end of the .pdf file. https://techinfo.porsche.com/techinf...e=MainFrameSet Best of luck in your search, if you have questions, feel free to ask, this is an excellent resource!

POST 4Original post

the easiest way is to check the front trunk. If it has a spare tire standing up on the back wall of the trunk it is a c2 if you don't see a spare but see a black sqaure thing sticking out of the carpet about 2'x2' then it is a c4. I am sure someone here has a picture of what I am talking about they could post for you. JIM

trunk of AWD...big black box thingie. Spare is under the trunk floor.

POST 6Original post

I think the VIN will only provide info on the C2/C4 specifically for pre MY2000 vehicles though.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
