Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace "' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check code porsche did back in the day' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I have owned my 2002 C2 for 24 years and have probably had the RMS replaced 5 or 6 times from 2002 thru 2007 until the factory found the right one.

Looking at my car's Carfax report at 33K miles the front crankshaft oil seal was replaced by New Country Porsche of Greenwich, CT.

I looked it up on PCSS and in 2007, the replaced the engine and transmission (auto) under "

New Country was original dealer then car changed hands and ended up in California.

Many engines were replaced early on, from case center-line bores being out of spec, before the PTFE seal was developed to help center the seal even when the center-line bore was slightly off
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Looking at my car's Carfax report at 33K miles the front crankshaft oil seal was replaced by New Country Porsche of Greenwich, CT. New Country was original dealer then car changed hands and ended up in California. How does the main seal on a high quality Porsche need replacing 33K miles and 2 years? Was this some sort of IMS check code Porsche did back in the day. The engine numbers show that it was original and it runs and pulls hard. Another mystery is cam deviation per my Durometric is only 0.97 & 0.83 w/ 134K miles.
I guess I could have worse curiosities...
Anything is possible, but for whatever reason the RMS was probably leaking and they replaced it. Remember, some cars had IMS issues @ 30k so nothing surprises me anymore with these cars. As for the cam deviation readings, there is no way with 132k that the cam pads haven't been replaced with those readings so someone has been in there for sure. This saves you about $5K+.
A leaking RMS is not a big deal today. They will leak, usually from the car sitting and not being driven. Porsche updated the RMS used many times over the early years until they settled on the Cayenne seal back in the mid to late 2000s. I have owned my 2002 C2 for 24 years and have probably had the RMS replaced 5 or 6 times from 2002 thru 2007 until the factory found the right one.
There is alot more to the story back in the early years on the RMS, Go-No-Go procedure, and IMSB, AOS, and Water Pump failures. Bottom line is you plenty of upgraded parts have been developed and procedures over the years to address every issue so you dont have to loose any sleep over anything.
Fill us in on the year, mileage today as well as when the car was at 33k miles and the RMS was changed. Was the IMSB ever upgraded, was the water pump and AOS ever replaced?

Ha that made me laugh..... it took them 3 or 4 tries to get the rms on the 996 to stop leaking in a couple thousand miles. Cars sit, they dry out and then they leak. The leason is to drive your 996 more.
I would say it depends on if its a 3 or 5 chain motor with regard to the cam deviation numbers. My original and never opened up 996.2 motor with 250K+ currently sits at 0.16 and -0.59, so I would say its definitely possible to see relatively low numbers like that.
My wife has a 2004 boxster S spyder that has an invoice from the dealer right around the 21k mark while under warranty that just has a single line that says engine replaced. Nothing else, no reasons, nothing before it. I looked it up on PCSS and in 2007, the replaced the engine and transmission (auto) under "
9810 Cannot establish cause, part replaced".
So a rear main seal does not surprise me!
You will NEVER see a 5-chain M96 with 134K miles with cam deviations that low.......So you must have a 3-chain ( 996.2) M96/03 with which it is very possible..
Also just a FYI the RMS was revised " six" times before the flexible PTFE ( Teflon) seal was developed to finally fix most of the RMS leaks...
Many engines were replaced early on, from case center-line bores being out of spec, before the PTFE seal was developed to help center the seal even when the center-line bore was slightly off
Interesting - and thanks for the information. My bad on not saying: it is a 2002 996.2 - 3 chain. Sold in 9/20/2001 and RMS in 3/06/2003 with 33,682 miles.
