Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

I did worry quite a lot when first noticing it but now calming down even still not 100% sure what it is.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello A couple of days ago my 996 C4 2003 w Tiptronic for the first time started dropping oil beneath When checking from underneath it is quite wet around the right side oil the scavenge pump. I have tried taken some useful photos but as you all know it is not that much space allowing a professional photographer to accompany me When checking with ChatGPT back and forth this is the conclusion.Looking closely at your photos I would actually put the diagnosis at: ~7080%: scavenge-pump O-ring ~1525%: leak from the cam/valve-cover area immediately above it small possibility: one of the plugs/seals in the cam housing The reason Im not saying 100% is that oil running down from above can make the pump look like the source. Do you guys agree? PS I intend visiting my Porsche Indi workshop for them to check and take action and this is just getting an idea of how serious issue I am facing. All feedback very much appreciated!! Best regards Stefan

POST 2Original post

The AOS breather valve is located up above that area. Another thing to check...

POST 3Original post

There was a guy who just had the same leak as you, it ended up being a plug on the cam cover (metal plug) that had corroded all the way through. When he started the car, the oil would just seep out. He replaced it with it in the car, I commented that I would of just put JB Weld on it. It wasn't but a few weeks ago.

Here's the thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...eeze-plug.html

POST 5Original post

You need to also post a picture from ABOVE.. Oil leak "evidence" always goes downward from gravity, UNLESS the air/wind forces it UP .... Always look for the "upper most" sign of the leak/evidence .

POST 6Original post

I have this issue on my Cab, but on the drivers side. O ring/seal for scavenger pump cover is on order and it is not a tough job to replace.

POST 7Original post

Mine looks like that. After following as high as I could it looked like it might be around the cam actuator seal or the actuator itself? Im interested in what you find and what others here think.

POST 8Original post

Might want to clean the area off as well and see if you can see where it's starting from. All great suggestions above but get underneath and clean it off the best you can to see where it might be coming from. Simple Green and some elbow grease should work....and maybe an old toothbrush :P)

Don't use Simple Green for this. It does not play nice with aluminum. There's a reason it's not allowed in airplane hangers.

Yep. Eventually it will spring a leak with age. Same with coolant tank and pipes. Just one of those things with a 25 year old car.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you very much for your help and support!! I did worry quite a lot when first noticing it but now calming down even still not 100% sure what it is. Will get under during the weekend and perform a proper cleaning and re-investigate + provide better pictures and revert back with my findings. Intend cleaning with alkaline degreaser and/or brake cleaner. Any recommendations? Thanks again and all the best!

Yeah, 25 year old plastic is a b!tch!

POST 14Original post

After you get it all cleaned up, put some Tracer Dye in the oil and buy a UV Light.. Simple and effective , something like this .. Oil Leak Detection Set UV Dye Leak Detector Tool For Fluorescent Agent SyringeBn | eBay

A 50/50 mix of LA Awesome works great and doesn't etch the aluminum.
