Since many like to change their exhaust sounds for multiple reasons, a nice used set is my first option.

You can check with Darin (FisterD) about getting a set of 3.6's if he has a set without having to do a trade...he will not need your 3.4's.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Fellow Rennlisters, Within the next few weeks or so I would like to buy some performance mufflers for my 01 996. I am looking for that clean refined not "to loud" sound. The stock sound is disapointing to me. Since many like to change their exhaust sounds for multiple reasons, a nice used set is my first option. Fabspeed, AP or GHL (quiet) are my first choices if I buy new. They all sound good for the money, going by sound clips (I know it is not the best way to tell). I always appreciate any advice/suggestions if it is offered. Thanks

POST 2Original post

What about doing the 3.6L muffler mod? If not, Tubi

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I currently have 3.4's. I saw a set of 3.6 mod mufflers for sale and am a bit tempted but the sound clips I have heard do not sound as good as some aftermarkets. It might have been a bad sound clip (?). I know the guys that have done it love it so it is forcing me to think about it I do like Tub (allot) but not the price though

Well I think it will come down to more of what you want to pay for a sound. You want the best sound it will cost a lot more than doing the mod others have done. Unless you find a great deal on a used setup on eBay etc. (PSE, Tubi, etc.). I do not consider the mod as a 'cheap' mod and doing somethig cheap to a Porsche, it is less expensive than buying new mufflers, and the sound is better than stock. It's a work-around for those that do not see a need to spend $1K + for nothing more than sound. You can check with Darin (FisterD) about getting a set of 3.6's if he has a set without having to do a trade...he will not need your 3.4's.

POST 5Original post

Good chance I will be selling my GHL exhaust in the VERY near future. They are 100% perfect and only a year old (miles on the car after install totals 6K) I will be removing them to do the Fabspeed muffler bypass. C.

POST 7Original post

Steven, I have an opportunity to get 3.6 mod mufflers (done by Hergesheimer) for free from a friend of mine. He paid $700 to have them modified and they were hardly used before he upgraded again. I was thinking of installing them on my 3.4 996. I do n ot know much about modified muffles.. What are your thoughts?

Let me know Chad, I would be very interested if you do. PM me with details once you know if you'll swap them out and an asking price. I am willing to wait for them if it all works out Thanks

Below is a link with lots of info, all you need. Youtube has some sound clips as well (called MKII for 3.6L , muffler hack or MKI for 3.4L. Most think MKII is best). https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...t=muffler+hack

Good points SpeedD. I'm hoping for a good deal, time will tell. For now my high dollar rubber hose will do. I'll just have to keep my foot on it @ >4K to get that sound I want.
