The previous owner had already had the radio replaced under warranty.

Suggestion
There's a recent TSB that says for any stereo issues with BOSE or PCM, to replace the amp, cd changer and radio with the latest version.

Suggestion
No sound, and no ability to change between radio and CD.
I have a similar problem on my c4s with Bose radio but w/o the PCM, my dealer told me this has been reported before and Porsche advises just replacing the radio.

Suggestion
Sometimes when I'm changing radio stations, it'll take several (5-10) seconds for the next station to start playing after I hit the pre-programmed button for that station.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anybody have this radio behavior? Occasionally, when I start the car the radio does not play even though it is on. It seems to happen randomly once in a while. I always leave the radio on when I shut the car off and 99 times out of 100 it comes back on when I re-start the car. But once in a while nothing comes out of the speakers. I then press the CD button and then when the CD starts playing I switch back to the radio and everything is fine. My guess is that it's some type of software glitch. Oh, and I have the PCM system so maybe it has something to do with that too. Anyway, no big deal and when I take it in for service I'll see if there is any software upgrade available. Just curious if anyone else has seen this behavior.

mrpc12,
next time it happens, try this.
Shut off the radio, remove the key from the ignition.
Wait until the MOST (plastic fiber optic ring connecting the headunit to the amplifier and back.....long story for another day) ring shuts off...this takes a few minutes (2-3). You will know when this occurs when the 'light' around the volume **** shuts off (no longer orange).
Now turn on the radio and you should be all set.
Pls PM or email if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the suggestion and I'll give it a try one of these days. However, usually when this happens I'm getting in my car to go somewhere and have already put it in reverse to head out of the garage when I realize my radio is not playing so to shut off the car and wait for 2-3 minutes would be kind of inconvenient. But it sounds better than replacing the radio.
I had my 03 radio replaced already by the dealer. Latest twist on the replacement was instead of turning on and playing music, it just sent a high pitch whine through the speakers whether the radio was on or off.
Next time I started the car, radio worked fine and has ever since. Just waiting for the next snafu!
Still my favorite car ever!!
Hmmmm....I have had this happen twice on my '03 C4S which I bought about 6 weeks ago. The first time I could not get it to play at all until it had been off for a while (as per itc's post), the second time it worked after I switched to the CD (as per the original post).
My question though is this - can I get the dealer to replace it and should I bother? It is annoying when it happens but it would be more annoying if I had it replaced and it still continued.
Thanks!
Barry
I had a few different weird issues with my stereo ('04 C2 w/ Bose). There's a recent TSB that says for any stereo issues with BOSE or PCM, to replace the amp, cd changer and radio with the latest version. All 3 replaced and no more issues.
I too have different issues with my radio/CD/PCM. Sometimes when I'm changing radio stations, it'll take several (5-10) seconds for the next station to start playing after I hit the pre-programmed button for that station.
And the song title that scrolls across the PCM screen 8 characters at a time is really annoying since it's not word aligned and quite often doesn't even match the currently playing song.
Also, I think it's odd that my radio can be turned on without a key in the ignition. I think about this sometimes when I park the car with the top down. Someone could just walk by and turn on my radio without setting off the alarm. I have tested this out - on my car.
Too bad I'm out of warranty, I'd like to have these fixed pro bono since it's been like this since purchase. ;-(
Spoke with my local dealer yesterday and they said that they had never heard of the problem and that there was no TSB outstanding for it. Does anyone have more information so that I can follow up with them?
Thanks!
Barry
Last night I had a similar problem in my '03 C2S. I turned on the radio, and the "Porsche" LED came on, but that's it. No sound, and no ability to change between radio and CD. I tried turning the radio off and on several times, but to no avail. I left it on, intending to look into the problem when I got home. After about 15 minutes of driving, the radio suddenly began to work normally. This morning, everything worked fine.
The previous owner had already had the radio replaced under warranty. If it happens again, I guess I'll try to get the radio and amp replaced.

I too have been "bitten" by this bug...only once (thought it was a fluke) until I saw this post!.....I have been thinking of upgrading my BOSE to the GPS/NAV Unit...I wonder IF THERE IS a TBS, could I get a deal on upgrading to the NAV Unit, anybody know?
Had no problems with my 996 but my wife's Cayenne S has had a lot of radio bugs. I think they already replaced part or all of the system once, and now they have to do it again. Seems to me Bose is turning out more than a few faulty units.
All the TSB's are available in renntech.org although I think you have to join to have access (but worth it).
I have had this happen about 5 or so times over the last year. I turn off the car, lock the car using the key (engaging the alarm), then unlock the car, and turn it back on. This always solves the sound problem immediately. I believe it is related to the security system not recognizing the radio, due to some random glitch, and therefore preventing the sound from working. Just cycle your car alarm by locking and unlocking the door with the remote and you will have your radio back instantly.
