Reported cause
Most likely, your excessive tire noise is caused by worn and hardenned tires.
Leading evidence: 'worn and hardenned tires' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'worn and hardenned tires' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace tires' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Anybody know where you can look up tire diameter or running circumference (distance for one revolution)???

Just make sure you use the factory specified tire sizes.

Suggestion
I've been thinking of going with 275/35/18 rears so that I could use the new Michelin PS2 tires.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Dear Friends
I just purchase my 3rd 911, a beautiful arctic silver 2000 , 996 Coupe. I have the standard OEM 17" rims with OEM Continentals tires. I hear excessive tire noise, even at under 30mph ( what could that be ? tires? alignment?) and my rear tire has a nail puncture. It is time to change tires.
Does anyone have any suggestions ? upgrade to 18" wheels?, suspension changes ? good all season tires.
I do not track the car but drive it every day to work winter and summer (about 35Kmiles/year)
Thank You for you responses

I was just in the same situation. What are your important features on the tires?
I had ContiSport and went to ContiSport2 N2. Coiuld not be happier, for now (let's see how they last) All tires will have a lot of road noise when they get old or get used. 17' wheels should have less road noise. I have a 2000 C2 and use it as a daily, also for long trips.
On my 993 I had Pirelli, massive grip for a short while, then lots of noise. I tried Michelin PS2 and was happy with dry performance but not wet traction, they were noisy also I think. I found them to be slighlty too stiff on sidewalls for everyday use.
get rid of those 17"s. the best upgrade you can do are 18's. better traction, better handiling not to mention looks. My favorite are the toyo t1s. they are affordable have a 280 treadwear rating and very low profile look as well as an agressive tread pattern. just my .02
Gregor,
I have a set of 18" Sport Classics "as new" that came off my 2001 C4 Cab. If you are interested, let me know. They will fit perfectly on your 996.
Lots of good choices out there for the 17" wheels and they are at a better price point and typically last longer. As a daily driver and in the Northeast, I would resist the temptation to go to 18"s. Just my .02.
I just took 19's off of my 2000 c2...They were noisy and bumpy. I bought a set of lightweight 5 spoke carrera taken off an 04 from wheelenhancement. They had less than 100 miles on them and were at a great price! Pilot sports on them now and much quieter ride.
Don't go with 17's, you will be sorry..
Message me for more info etc...
If one switches to 18" on a car originally spec'ed with 17", won't the odometer be underrepresented? More interestingly, won't the speedo show a slower value, perhaps leading to more tickets? Can these things be calibrated? Or do these instruments work independently of the tire revolutions?
Actually, I'm pretty sure that the overall diameter ISN'T the same, even with factory specified, and this probably does affect both speedo and odo. The 285/30/18s I have on the rear are smaller in diameter than the 265/40/17s that came stock. I've been thinking of going with 275/35/18 rears so that I could use the new Michelin PS2 tires.
You should buy my wheels from me so that I can get new ones!
I have 18" Sport Designs that I had refinished last year, with good Michelin Pilot Sports on them (225 front and 285 rear). I would love to get either the GT3 wheels (which will rub a bit in the front at full lock) or some Fikse Profil wheels.
I'm pretty sure there are two stock options for the rear 18". But I may be wrong!
In that case, do you think that the stock 265 has the same overall diameter as the stock 17" rear wheel?
Anybody know where you can look up tire diameter or running circumference (distance for one revolution)??? That would probably be the ticket to settle this debate. Or you can actually calculate the diameter of the wheel/tire buy combining the wheel size and profile, then solve for the circumfrence. Probabaly more accurate to look it up since you will be combining standard and metric and most rounding can affect this calculation and not give the perfect answer.
