Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Last I checked, Mayo didn't even have the alignment equipment to even perform an alignment on a 993.
Leading evidence: 'Check mayo didn't even have the alignment equipment' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check mayo didn't even have the alignment equipment' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Lot's of good works on here for both of them but I've only used Zims for parts and some minor work in the past.

Suggestion
1.Mayo noticed a recent battery change in the 993 and indicated it might have triggered multiple codes (it didn't since power was supplied to the battery during the change).

Suggestion
Looks like a lot of people here has used RUF for PPI, how much do they charge for a typical one?

Suggestion
The more I think about it, I'd just use Zims, they're close and good.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Mayo is in that general area, as is Zims...in fact Zims is REALLY close to Grapevine. None actually IN Grapevine that I know of. Lot's of good works on here for both of them but I've only used Zims for parts and some minor work in the past. Dallas Eurocars and Loudens are actually in Dallas but on the western edge so not
too
far from Grapevine, depending on traffic. The more I think about it, I'd just use Zims, they're close and good.
I have to edit my post...forgot on was on the 996 board. You may want to call since my experience with these is for older/track 911's. I do know that Jim at Dallas Eurocars has specifically mentioned 996 experience.
Yeah, I thought Zims were pretty much tuners/track prep specialists for older 911's. Surprised not many from D/FW mention Ruf. I've always been taken care of there, Hans and Wayne both come with years experience with Porsche - Hans has Kyle Bass's TT, it's a beast! The shop foreman is Bob - very thorough and detailed.
Wow...thanks for the great input. Between RUF and Zims, I'm sure I'll be able to get fixed up.
Thanks again. Hope to be driving an my pcar back to Houston on Sunday night!
Called Zims...they refused to do a PPI on a 996, citing legal liability! The service manager I spoke with indicated he had heard of instances where after a PPI and subsequent purchase, the engine cratered and the PPI provider was sued. This is purely a 996 issue according to this guy. Comments? Is the RMS issue on 996s that bad?
Ruf did mine. They were cheaper and did a better job than Park Place did on a Targa I had PPied.
Hans will tak care of you, and Ruf hs a sterling reputaion.
Thanks again for the suggestions. RUF is problematic...booked until next week. Mayo is convenient and is willing to work with my schedule and is more reasonable on price. Any thoughts on Mayo?
Mayo's is great been using them for the last 15 yrs. Tom will do a very good PPI no worries there. Ed the owner is one of the people who does the Tech quiz for PCA very knowledgeable guy.
I think if you're able to have car to Ruf at an opportune time - (ie. someone no-shows and appointment, etc.) you'd get it done this week..If I recal, you're not in D/FW - are they going off site to do the PPI or are you getting car delivered for PPI?
Try the guys at Fifth Gear in Lewisville. I live in Flower Mound and took my car to them last year before I bought it. I met them at the track (Cresson) and they are great guys who know Porsche's well. They did a thourough inspection (1+ hours) and showed me the underbelly up on the lift and walked me through everythign they were looking for. They didn't charge me a penny and just asked for my business. Smart move, because since then they have put on PSS9's and done several other things for me.
Hans at RUF said it costs $240 or something like that for the '01 996. 5th Gear seemed more pragmatic about it, saying the onboard computer will disclose any past "Check Engine" lights and also said compression loss would cause a "Check Engine" light to illuminate. Therefore, they did not recommend a leak down and/or compression test. 5th Gear was less than $200 ($95/hr x 2).
Sure, here are a couple of examples of their findings:
1.Mayo noticed a recent battery change in the 993 and indicated it might have triggered multiple codes (it didn't since power was supplied to the battery during the change). Had they have known what they were doing, they would have simply checked to ensure the readiness codes were ok with a scanner;
2.Mayo noted the 993 needed an alignment when the 993 had just had an alignment at a Porsche dealer 2000 miles ago, drives perfectly straight and no irregular tire wear. Last I checked, Mayo didn't even have the alignment equipment to even perform an alignment on a 993.
3.There was a lag in the shifting of the tiptronic transmission between 1st & 2nd. This is a known trait of the 993 Tip. In manual mode the shifts are instantaneous.
There are others. I suspect what Mayo did was make a list of possible problems of certain Porsches (from possibly message boards) but does not have an understanding of what to look for in inspecting them.
