ouch at least for the tire sizes on the BMW...I am running the Continentals for the last few winters (Ohio) and they offer good value and good enough traction through the winter.

I actually ran these tires on the track 3 times (3 different tracks on 3 different days), have put 20,000 miles on them in 5 years and they still have tread on them.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm looking for a set of all season tires for my 996.2 Carrera cabriolet, it came with high performance summer tires. I have somewhat unique circumstances where I don't have a second car but don't ever have to drive in really bad snow. I simply want to be to drive when it's cold outside. I don't really have storage for a second set of wheels and tires and would rather not spend the money for a second set of wheels to keep two sets of tires around, unless absolutely necessary.
When I search on tire rack with the stock tire size I don't find anything other than summer tires. I found this helpful PDF buried on Porsche's website and it looks like I can mount an alternative size without issue:
https://files.porsche.com/filestore/...es-996-986.pdf
Searching this alternative size brings up nine high performance all season tires on tire rack. Has anyone had particularly good or bad experiences with any of these tires?
Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 Plus
Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4
Bridgestone Potenza RE980AS+
BFGoodrich G-Force COMP-2 A/S Plus
General G-MAX AS-05
Pireli P Zero All Season Plus
Kumho Ecsta PA51
Yokohama Advan Sport A/S+
Hankook Ventus S1 Noble2
Thanks!
Hello,
I have had the Continentals, the Hankooks , and for a brief time the Michelin Pilots
Although on a different vehicle (2006 BMW z4 Coupe) In my opinion the Michelins out perform the other but the price! ouch at least for the tire sizes on the BMW...I am running the Continentals for the last few winters (Ohio) and they offer good value and good enough traction through the winter. Although non of these are as good as a of dedicated winters they will get you through . You do have to be a bit more cautious or turn off the traction control and have a blast!
Hope that helps
Michelin Pilot Sports are pretty much the greatest street tire you can get in any guise.
That said the BFG Comps and Generals are also very good tires.
Where in NYC are you?
If it’s just an all around driver and not used to track/DE then continental all season sports if not nothing beats the Michelin all season 4 I have/had most and loved my continental actually they held up longer then the Michelin but they didn’t offer dry grip like the Michelin but in light snow and heavy rain the continental were superior and offered a softer ride
Mike in NYC
I live in Illinois and run the Yokohama Advan Sport A/S year round, and they perform great! It gets below freezing here, so I do not need to go skating. That is the reason I got them because the summer tires were "cracking" and a little slick below 32. Hope this helps.
I had Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and switched to All Season tires recently just for the colder months where im driving. Since I also have snow tires I tried the cheapest all season option on the market after reading good reviews. Vercelli Strada 2's. They are quiet and work well. In the rain they don't grip as much as the Michelins but they do their job for the time being. They are also less than $400 dollars for a set of four. You can buy them at Walmart or on eBay and have them shipped directly to your a tire shop with installation for an extra 50 dollars using the Car Advise feature on eBay during checkout.

I have a 99 triple black 996 cab and run Michelin AS/3+. They are pretty great tires all around. Snow up to 6 is still quite slippery, but I dont get stuck and can still drive. I actually ran these tires on the track 3 times (3 different tracks on 3 different days), have put 20,000 miles on them in 5 years and they still have tread on them. They worked in -10F temps, and work in 100F too. Good in the wet.
What else can I say, they are Michelinthe best
I got a set of Pirelli Soto Zeros on winter wheels 3 years ago (this will be my 3rd winter on them) theyve been great. Excellent cold/wet/snowy/icy grip - I dont daily drive my car in winter (nor summer) but Im certainly not afraid to take it out in the cold or worried about getting caught out in a snow squall...
Note: any 4-season will “get you home”. Expecting any performance, such as emergency braking on icy or below-freezing temps, will leave you wishing you’d bought winter tires and cheap wheels. Just saying, from experience.
We have had great experiences with the listed Continental and Pirelli tires on our Audi S8, and similarly terrific performance from the listed Michelins on our 996.
Here is the bottom line, it's all koolaid. Some please drink the red koolaid, others the purple one, it's all Koolaid. I have had p4s on my C4s, and now have the Contis on it, Amazing car, amazing tires. I have the F1 supersports on my targa, amazing tires as well, What I could say is that the compounds on the new tires are very different from the older tires. any tires that is 3 years or younger that use the newer tech are really amazing. The new F1 supersport, is far better than the older one and lasts twice as long. Vredestein has changed the game and all the other companies are following. They started providing the UHP all seasons in the US with the newer compounds. The newer compounds are not as track worthy as the older tires, but they are really close, have a more quiet ride, last 2x to 3x as long and cost less.
I just replaced the Bridgestone alenza on my Cayenne s with the new. UHP good year F1 and they are amazing.
I would argue its flavored coolaide and the owner needs to figure out what flavor they want. But the flavors are getting tastier as the technology improves.
You really cant beat a good set of winter tires once it gets cold. I lived in the NY and Jersey for many years and had to brave many storms. A good set of winter tires will last several seasons. I never regretted buying them. Only ever regretted not having them and being stuck somewhere. Worst of all on the side of the road in a snow storm.
you also get to switch back to summers instead of asking an AS tire to do everything.
