I don't normally recommend products like this, but just purchased one for myself and well folks, it's worth the money if you like having a drink while you drive and don't like fighting the factory version and have you drink fall over because it won't sit snug in the holder.

Definitely don't try to use the large (30 oz) or super-large (40 oz.) tumblers from YETI or Stanley.

I do custom building kits using LEGO, so I know something about this kind of work.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

One of the little nags with the 996 (and 986) is the flimsy swing-out cup holders designed by the sharp minds at Stuttgart.
The factory swing out cup holder is in a weird place, doesn't hold larger cups, and tends get stuck if not break. I don't normally recommend products like this, but just purchased one for myself and well folks, it's worth the money if you like having a drink while you drive and don't like fighting the factory version and have you drink fall over because it won't sit snug in the holder. I have NO affiliation with this seller, but worth a mention here due to years of reading about all the failed aftermarket attempts on improving the factory design. The product is well made and holds most cups, even tall tumblers. (see picture) You can purchase it on Etsy.

Let me know what you think. Here's mine...
Totally agree, but if you REALLY want to see the Porsche tax, price a brand new OEM swing-out cup holder (ref# 18 in diagram) from Porsche... it's like $2200!!! That's just for the cup holder. On early model 996, I believe you have to purchase a new support frame (ref #24) and rear bracket too (ref #19). Plan to add another $500. Link...

(see link below) This one is a better value for OEM quality, but requires moving AC control unit to the lower console which involves the AC bezel and upper shelf in addition to the cup holder kit. That and the cup holder kit would probably be about $220.00. The problem with this OEM in-slot cup holder kit, is the based is shallow and cup size in small. Again, you risk having the coffee falling over.

I'm in a '99 with no glove box and no swing out cup holder.
The one from Etsy seemed to be the best choice aside from the price tag.
I have that swing cupholder in my Targa- Porsche (996-552-958-00-S31), while I do use mine for Coffee and like it, there is no way in hell its worth $2k insane WoW
...I know a guy parting out his Targa....I might want to pick up a spare, just in case.
Low-production molded plastic is expensive no matter how you cut it. You can print one, and it'll be mechanically totally fine, but by the time you get it filled, smoothed and painted you're gonna be looking at about the same cost.
I have one and love it!
As for the cost, this is a cottage product, low volume, high labor business. I do custom building kits using LEGO, so I know something about this kind of work. I love supporting our community when they produce such high-quality items that really address an issue with the cars we love. This will be my only Porsche for the rest of my life, and I want the best for it. So, let's talk less about what it costs and more about how it works and the quality of the part. We all pay much more for much less every day of the week.
Looks like a good idea for phone placement, but not drinks IMHO. One of the problems with the OEM swing-out cup holder is that it blocks the air flows which in turn causes hot drinks to go cold quicker and cold drinks to "sweat" and then drip onto the center console. 1st world problems I know.
But I also see that etsy mount you listed being problematic for tall tumblers that are common today.
After 4 Porsches, this is the first cup holder that works well in my opinion. I like the fact that it doesn't interfere with gear shifts.
I agree with ya ZuffenZeus on the tumbler thing, but for my grande starbucks drip coffee it works well. The only thing is I need to keep the stopper in the top of coffee, but it is a solid hold and not flimsy. I'll keep it for my coffee
Ok Ill say it $180 for a cup holder is just Fing stupid! Hey its your $ do with it as you like
If I really need a Starbucks (or whatever) that badly Ill just hold it between my legs or drink it quickly (which Ive done a few times (no spills yet) Drive safely!
LOL!! I agree with your cost analysis, but I like my junk too much to drive with a hot cup of coffee between my legs. I'll use my Ultimate, it works for me.

Got this
Got this
for ~$10 off Amazon. I added some padding on the lower back just in case, the part that contacts the seat is foam. Lots of flexibility in where you want it to sit, can get a bit cramped around the shifter with a tall container unless slid back. Might need it slid forward for a passenger, shorter legs may make that unnecessary.
i was just looking at these. Any idea what the difference between the $179 model and the $79 one?
anyone try one of these?

or this?

For what its worth, that part number is for the cup holder with a leather trim panel (Savannah). The regular plastic-trim version, 996-552-183-02-01C, is about $354 from Sunset.
Still not cheap but significantly less.
Reading through this thread the biggest thing that bothers me is just integration into the interior. Here's a quick sketch of an idea I had in the shower, grill me. I don't use the cubby under the armrest anyways so having the drinks out of the way over here seems logical.
Nubs could probably be printed from TPU to be a grippy spring, but the traditional plastic lever w/ an actual spring behind it is also valid.
No blocking shifter, no condensation issues besides unclipping the tray to drain and wash as needed, no losing legroom or A/C vents.
i was looking at these on eBay.. right in line with your pics

Yeah the first link is actually pretty decent, I just don't want to leave the armrest open to hold drinks. Figured since a lot of us don't ever store anything down there, just make the armrest the cupholder (lets us have a deeper pocket).
After three, maybe fours years, I can say this one works for me.
Perfect location for setting cup and picking it up (armrest area just won't work for me, floor wouldn't work either)
Doesn't block air vent or any controls
Holds smaller and larger cups/yetis securely- I've never had a spill
Doesn't intrude uncomfortably into the passenger space
Aesthetically, perfect for my car - I covered the base with my interior leather (skived to 4mm.) doing that and painting the top part, you could match any interior
Aesthetically, to my eye anyway, it looks like it belongs
That's a compromise unfortunately - all the forward-located options are in the way of something unless it's under the passenger airbag like a 997. But that has to be really thought through for safety concerns.
If it's a not-huge can or a smaller coffee cup, I could make it fit in the trapezoidal filler plate that comes with a console delete. But that's only space for one.
Off-topic but is this a 911 thing? I've raced and built several cars with track safety systems and never been forced to sit upright. If anything a fixed-back bucket feels awful until you recline it.
It's more of a cage design thing. I have a Teq cage in my 996 and the cross bar goes straight across vs some of the other cages that bows away from the seat. The 997 Pan bar has an X and allows you to sit further back as with most of the non OEM cages available.
Picked this up
They had these up by the counter @ O'Reilly's for a buck so I splurged and bought 2, OG for sure and not the best, remove when open/close window door can't beat the price tho
Wow.. I haven't seen those since the '80s! haha
My only advice is stick some Velcro (furry side) on the plastic clamp that rides against the glass to prevent the possibility of permanent marks on the glass.
How secure is this cup holder? Does it wobble with the cup in it when you are driving? I purchased the cheaper model from the same seller ($80 version here:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/1532801...4%3A1532801569
) and it feels a bit wobbly.
I have the $180 version and its very secure and site in the perfect spot.
is it expensive.. a little. Does $180 solve the problem my $140k car came with. Definitely.
For small or medium sized cups or tumblers, it's works great. And in my opinion, leaps better than the OE slide out cup holders the VW group produced for Porsche.
Definitely don't try to use the large (30 oz) or super-large (40 oz.) tumblers from YETI or Stanley. Again, a normal sized coffee cup (10-12 oz) or even a (16-20 oz) tumbler with a small footprint works great in my experience.
