I am converting to LED bulbs at the same time as replacing my lenses in the next few days, so that is probably a good solution if using this hack.

Suggestion
One issue I foresee with using headlights as DRLs is the 986/996 issue with the internal headlight lenses being melted/burnt by halogen bulbs if used too much.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Since some of the past threads have broken links, I thought I'd share this simple DiY daytime running lights (i.e. DRL) "hack" using factory lighting. This is especially important for areas that now require DRL.
The DiY project should only take you 30 minutes or less. Once the jumper is made, it's pretty much plug and play.
1. Order two fuse taps from Amazon. Lots of options under $10
2. Create a jumper between the two standard fuse taps. Insert 15 amp fuses on the taps (25 amp for A6 if you have factory heated seats)
3. Insert jumper between fuses A6 to A9
4. Test
This will enable the low beam headlights to come on during operation without the need of using the light switch. When not needed, simply remove jumper and reinstall 15 amp fuse in A9.
If you have factory heated seats with a 25 amp fuse on A6, be sure to insert the appropriate fuse on the fuse tap as listed for your car.
As with all DiY retrofits or electrical hacks, proceed with caution and at your own risk!
Im a new 986 Boxster owner looking for DRL solution. Hence the 2 year refresh of this thread. One issue I foresee with using headlights as DRLs is the 986/996 issue with the internal headlight lenses being melted/burnt by halogen bulbs if used too much. I am converting to LED bulbs at the same time as replacing my lenses in the next few days, so that is probably a good solution if using this hack.
But Ive also seen an alternative hack that uses the fog lights as DRLs, inserting a diode to prevent battery discharge while the ignition is off. Will have to decide which one to use.
Thanks

I ordered the set of 2 (4 halves) from Sierra Madre Collection, but it did say last one in stock when I ordered, but now says "Available".

I found a couple of other European suppliers (still left hand drive countries) but obviously more expensive to ship.

I used the "O-Ring" hack to make my LED fog lights into DRLs. You just slip a 1 7/8" O-ring behind the light switch and Bob's your uncle!
I haven't experienced any downsides to this hack, and like others here, I like having the higher visibility of DRLs!
Wow! what a simple yet elegant hack! I ran out to the garage and tried it right away. I didn't have big enough o-rings so used 2 doubled up elastic bands and
It Worked!
But I will get an o-ring as the black will be far less visible than a twisty red and blue elastic.
Thanks for the hint Modern356. I did already order a pair of LED H7's for my headlights, but will also order them for the fogs both for cooler running and >6K colour. Besides making me legal in BC, I also appreciate the visibility.
Correction: I received my lense kit and realized that it includes only the top halves of the left and right lenses, so 2 pieces. That does match what was pictured on the website, so I wrongly assumed both top and bottom halves were included. No ill effect though, since the burnt holes in these lenses occur in the top halves, not the bottom. Also, since it take a whole day (including some baking time) to disassemble your headlight, and 3 days for the sealant to cure after re-assembly, Ill wait until after the summertime driving season is over to tackle this.
For what its worth, the 986/998 halogen inner lenses for DOT-spec lights is one piece. The Euro/Row spec has just the upper half and the bottom is open to the reflector.
Hmm, Thanks for that insight. I took a closer look at my existing inner lenses and, yes, they do appear to be one full piece, with the bottom half clear (Canadian spec car). Since I'm not doing the mod right away, I'll contact Sierra Madre to confirm that I can retrofit with the upper half only and leave the bottom open (as you mentioned the Euro spec is). There is a small slot in the existing full lens where a white strip sticks through, perhaps for headlight aiming purposes. The replacement halves do not have this slot.

I dont believe that if DRLs werent original equipment (which they clearly were not) on your car, you cant be ticketed/held liable for not having them
Obviously, if your that worried about not having them, turn your lights on in the daytime.
I have a US car in Canada and I think part of the import requirement was to enable them, but in my car the requirement was with this fog light mod. As a result I got the car with two burned out fog lights LOL.
I would prefer to work the switch to be honest, and I like the corner marker look. Both add a touch of vintage charm to this interesting platform - maybe thats just my nostalgia having grown up driving 80s VWs. But really, I would prefer the lows to be the DRL and keep fogs for fogging.
And why dont the side markers blink!? Seems like a no brainer for safety and appearance, but Ill never see it so its way down the to do list.

Using the fog lamps is a much better solution than low-beam headlight for DRL's and put LEDs in the fogs
The "O" ring hack is nice and easy.
