A couple of people also told me that the horns can be replaced without removing the bumper but I think they are referring to the Turbo bumper which has larger grill openings than the Carrera bumper.

Okay...this may be a silly, but am I the only one that does not like the horn/beep sound of the early 996's? It makes a beep that sounds more Trabant than sportscar. Is everyone's like that? Did not have this complaint with previous Porsches.

I'm with you. The horn in my 996 sounds weak, to say the least. I should've changed the horns when I had the Ruf bumper put on. I just don't want to deal with the hassle of taking off the bumper just to replace the horns. Maybe in the future if I get a third radiator I will replace the horns.

When my Boxster bumper cover was replaced I added a set of air horns. So I now have 4 horns.
Next time a truck starts backing up into me maybe they will hear me blasting the horns, unlike the first time.
Porsche horns are of poor quality, and many do not work even when new. (Only one of the two horns worked on my car when it was delivered). Does your horn produce a dual tone? Also, the horn can be replaced without removing the bumper cover.

Was the dealer able to replace your GT3's horn without removing the bumper? I think the GT3 and Carrera openings are very similar.
At any rate, I now have a Ruf RGT front bumper with mesh grill inserts so I have no way to replace the horns without taking off the bumper.

I can't remember the last time I tooted the horn. It might have a klaxon sound for all I know.

Nope, I don't hear a dual tone...so one may not be working? I will check the connections, that is if I can get to them.

There are 2 horns, high and low pitch, just like most other cars.
They are mounted on a bracket on a 996 just like a Boxster, next to the passenger side radiator, one above the other. You cannot see the top horn, only the bottom.
The bottom horn is the one that usually goes out because it points to the road and water gets inside. The top one is protected from water by the bumper cover. The connectors are very well sealed from the elements and they cannot come loose since they are locked in place.
There is an opening in the bottom of the bumper cover and with a flashlight you can see the lower horn. Stick you hand up there and touch the horn while someone beeps the horns. No vibration or sound then that is the one out of service.

Sounds like you need to replace one of the two horns. The mechanic can do it without removing the bumper in no time (you can put one hand through the opening in the bumper to reach the horn).

Thanks for the tips. I had no idea that there would be two horns with each a separate sound. I will fiddle with it tomorrow eve and see what I find. I actually use the horn about every other time I take it out (=daily) to say bye to my kids and what not. It sounds like a tired van. Even my wife noticed that there was something wrong with it.
