Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
No design engineer worth his salt would even consider having the guage "reset/recalibate" with the engine running.
Leading evidence: 'Reset /recalibate"' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Reset /recalibate"' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
My guage reads the previous low after refill on about 1 in 4 fills until ignition has been reset maybe 3 -4 times.

Suggestion
In my case it was running because I had just jumped started the car because the battery was dead and the tank was empty, and drove straight from my home to the gas station down the street.

plus it's dangerous (though i used to always leave my old car running when i filled up).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

She was on empty and light was on for a while. It was hot as heck yesterday and I left the car running w/the ac on. I put 8gal in and pull away but the gage was still reading empty. I turn the car off restart it and it was still reading empty w/the light on. Knowing there was gas in the car I drive away. 10 min on the freeway to my dest. I have lunch and when I start the car it was reading just under a quarter tank. Drive home another 10 min. on the freeway car was running great. I get home turn the car off restart it and it was reading 1/2 tank, which is where it should be. Checked it again this morning and its reading 1/2 tank. What could have caused this? Should I trust the gage reading?
Once it happened to me a year ago, with gas gauge reading empty after pumping $10 of gas as they only had 91 octane. Don't know what happened but, no problems since than.
Same thing on my Boxster. Filled up the tank with the engine running and it took a while for the needle to show full. For some reason it does not like it when you fill up with the engine running.
In my case it was running because I had just jumped started the car because the battery was dead and the tank was empty, and drove straight from my home to the gas station down the street.
No design engineer worth his salt would even consider having the guage "reset/recalibate" with the engine running. Obvious HAZARDOUS circumstance.
If you're going to do that then you should at least warn the other people at the fuel island that they should leave immediately if they don't want their life put at serious risk.
What wwest is saying, serves you right for pumping gas with the engine running. Blow yourself up and everyone around you, why don't you.
Surprised your CEL didn't go on as well.
Ouch. First time I've been flamed and it was a double whammy, stupidity for not cutting the engine and "gage" instead of "gauge". No excuse for either. I'm banning myself from posting for a while as penance.
I didn't realize how much of a danger it is to leave the car running while pumping. I've lived in countries where full serve is the norm and very few people kill the engine when filling up. I've never heard of anything blowing up. Now I know better.
All in good fun, buddy. See the smilies
It was just too good to pass up. Cheap shot, I know, but it seems thats all I can afford nowadays. Keep on posting!!
My guage reads the previous low after refill on about 1 in 4 fills until ignition has been reset maybe 3 -4 times. Its going in for its first annual service so I imagine someone will tell me it is a routine issue.
you can break the gas gauge if you don't shut off the car while fueling (i speak from experience). plus it's dangerous (though i used to always leave my old car running when i filled up).
