Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

18 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I installed my new EVO cold air induction yesterday and I spent the afternoon running errands and enjoying the wonderful sounds. I went out in the garage a couple of hours ago to take my wife for a drive so she could also enjoy the joyous melody. My car wouldn't start not even a click. The battery is fine and all connections leading to the starter appear fine also. I tried resetting the alarm several times and moved the gear shifter back and forth numerous times. I checked all fuses with a tester and they are all ok. Is there a relay that I should check? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I called the dealer and he had no additional suggestions. Once again, I plead with all of you Porsche gurus for assistance. I hate to admit defeat and have it towed to the dealer. Thanks in advance for any help.

POST 2Original post

Did you type that first paragraph with your pinky finger sticking straight out? Make sure that the clutch pedal is all the way to floor and try starting it. You may not be activating the safety switch. Have a glorious evening.

POST 3Original post

Dude, brain farts happen to everyone, easy there Irishman!!

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It would be my middle finger that was sticking out because I'm seriously frustrated. My first paragraph was probably a subconscious attempt to offset all of the four letter words that were coming out of my mouth in the garage a few moments ago. I just resolved one problem and up pops another. My previous CAI (first generation EVO) was causing a surging problem. ArizonaScott pointed me in the right direction. I just fixed that by getting the new EVO CAI. I don't think my car likes me. If I had a clutch pedal, I would give that a try....mine is a tiptronic. 1999porsche911, you have helped me out in the past and I appreciate your expertise...I would appreciate any other ideas. I have had a little practise chasing down electric problems.....

POST 5Original post

I am only joking, so please don't take it seriously. Other things that have been problematic with these cars that might effect the starting, is the ignition switch. Many have had to be replaced. Is the key movement a little sloppy? It could be that the safety switch in the Tiptronic shfter is not working, but I know nothing about the Tip setup, like, will it allow the car to start when it is in neutral? I can't think of anything that would have been distirbed in the engine compartment while installing the EVO kit that would cause this problem. You might make a visual in there, tho. I assume that your headlight come on strong, horn works, etc? Double check fuses.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

99porsche911, don't worry....I'm seriously thick skinned (and headed). Is there any way to check the ignition switch...can I bypass it? The key movement is not sloppy. I tried starting in neutral...no luck. I have plent of juice in the battery...lights are strong etc. They do go off momentarily when I try to start. I hooked up a battery charger/booster....no difference. I'm resonably sure the CAI is unrelated. Is there a relay that is related to the alarm or the shifter safety switch? Thanks again for the help.

POST 7Original post

The dimming of the lights when the key is turned would lead me to think that you have a short somewhere. Could be switch. Might check the fusable link in the front truck on the left fenderwell. Switch is only about $35 at a VW dealership and easy to put on which might be the easiest thing to eliminate before checking the starter. Maybe someone here knows how to check the shift selector switch. Just in case it something screwy with the DME, maybe disconnect battery for a few minutes and try?

POST 8Original post

try jumping the the starter, if the starter cranks, then you have a problem with your ignition

POST 9Original post

Id say the solenoid on the starter may of went out possibly.

POST 10Original post

if he jumped the starter, and didnt start, then you have a bad starter (solenoid)

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Guys, thank you very much for the advice. I really appreciate your time and help. 99porsche911, I followed your advice and disconnected the battery for a minute and then reconnected it. It started right up! What the heck does that mean? (other then I need to carry a 10mm wrench around in the furure) You guys are the reason Rennlist is such a fantastic place. Thanks again for the help.

POST 13Original post

Ign switch failures very rarely casue a no start, ive only seen 2 , generaly they just casue the dash to stay lit up and the headlights and wipers not to work or to work with the car off. neutral saftey swiches generaly dont go bad but anything is possible, but as long as the dash shows park/neutral it should start. As far as the car starting after you un hooked the battery, I would guess an imobilizer problem, maybe have some one check for faults, and i would check for water under the pass seat

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Brad, I'll have someone check for stored fault codes in the near future. I drove all day today with no problems. No water under the seat. Thanks for the advice. I'm still puzzled, but happy it's working now.

POST 15Original post

if you dont mind spending 30$ i would replace the mfi and start lock relays just as insurance

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Brad, that sounds like cheap insurance. I saw the relays under the driver's side of the dash. How do I identify those relays? Thanks again, Mark.

POST 17Original post

ill look up the position numbers on monday, lately we have been replacing a few on early cars

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Brad, I really appreciate your help. My first thought when this problem occurred was that it was a bad relay. Thanks again.
