Track record with 928 engines is that they are bullet proof as long as you replace the longest rubber reinforced timing belt ever.

The thing I love about these is it takes about 20 minutes to pull out and change the self contained oil.

I'm particularly keen to see how a Vortech S/C is as it appaers the power is more on higher revs it won't be my first choice as I would have run for an Eaton roots type with less lag however I can be convinced.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Are you looking for a blown motor too?
How would you expect such an absurd gain in power with only 5 psi? The turbo has 100 more crank horsepower than the 996 C2 and I'm sure the boost is alot higher than 5 psi!
v8hunter:
My son and I did some research in 10/01 when we got our '02 C2 coupe. We went to S-Car-Go Racing in Northern California and ask if they would recommend placing twin turbos or supercharging our new car?
They said after all of the modifications and strengthen of the engine etc. it would be cheaper to buy a TT, they also felt that the stock engine cannot withstand the 100+ extra horsepower. For sure it will be an easy way to blow your engine.
I would be cautious before supercharging. Good luck
Bocky
'02 Carrera C2 coupe (son's)
A stage 1 supercharger install can get that kind of power increase. The TT motor has lower compression; most stage 1 supercharger kits do not modify the internals and use the stock compression.
Stock max boost on a 996TT is .8 Bar or roughly 11.2 PSI. However, the block on the TT is a specially manufactured 3.6 litre that is designed to work with a turbo. People like CJV have gotten the 996TT up to 600+ RWHP with various mods including hybrid turbos. I am not sure if he has done any real "engine" mods though.
I know that a couple companies do perform supercharger upgrades on the NA996, but I am not sure about long term reliability issues. I do know that the 150 HP increase advertised is BHP not RWHP - that's a big difference.
Also I'm not an automotive engineer, but I think that Porsche's engines are so well built that 4-6 PSI boost should not hurt them too much. Your best bet would be to find a company that warrantees their work for as long a period of time as possible. For example, Brabus provides a full 4 year / 50K mile warranty on all their custom engines for mercedes.
Two or three 928s are over on that board with over close to or over 500rwhp through supercharging. That is close to 200 extra HP. They haven't blown up at all. If the installation and mapping is done correctly, a supercharger will not blow a well engineered engine up. Detonation and RPMs do. More wear and tear MAYBE, but not the stereotyped "blow up".
You're not saying that a 928 engine will hold together better than a later 996 engine will, are you?
I don't know what the track record is for 928 engines but I know they had alot of problems early on with faulty M96 engines in boxsters and 996s even without anyone doing any modifications.
"pls tell me the results about forced inductions once its done. i would be more interested in how many miles the engine can run with the supercharger."
i'm doing it too (and so is my buddy). increase is only 100 hp on 5 psi
this tuner has done lots of other exotic supercharger and turbo charger systems. i'm sure it will turn out great. i went to see the kit and it looks very very nice. this kit is so well done that it looks like some thing Ferrari would build it from factory.
don, the cost is $10k + install. that'll be about 1/2 to 1/3 what Ruf's will be, and this tuner (who desires to remain anonymous for a little while longer) has a great rep and is in the U.S. so, if you have a problem with it, it will be remedied quickly. and, it works for both the 3.4 and 3.6
Track record with 928 engines is that they are bullet proof as long as you replace the longest rubber reinforced timing belt ever.
There is somebody making 23psi boost on a 928 engine. Its holding together JUST fine. And I assume that a well cared for 996 engine will not "blow up" either.
Such misconceptions. Detonation and RPMS blow engines. HP does not, within a regular arena. More wear? Yep. But not "blowing up"
"if your friend uses the same unit for a 3.4 and 3.6, I wonder why RUF is testing different units for each motor????"
i don't know if it's the same unit, but do know the solution is available for both. the vendor doesn't much care what RUF is doing and never has, yet has produced more power for less money (reliably) than RUF for years.
That sounds great! If he can duplicate what Ruf is trying to do, that is, get factory acceptance and have Porsche dealers install with warranty intact, that is really a good news!
"get factory acceptance and have Porsche dealers install with warranty intact, that is really a good news!"
that'd be a first in the US. RUF stuff has never been factory accepted warranty wise. that said, if RUF's stuff is 2X+ more, it'll still be cheaper to supercharge somewhere else, blow a motor, and replace it out of pocket! iow, is paying over 2X more to be under warranty really a warranty or just a pre-payment of a new engine which you may never even need? and, the vendor currently doing the supercharger doesn't need factory acceptance anyway because they don't blow up motors.
Ben, all I know is what they are attempting to accomplish with this effort, that's all. That from a good source. Whether they accomplish their goals is quite another thing.
it would sure seem hard to believe porsche would in any way participate in a RUF supercharger warranty program when to do so will hurt both turbo sales and new 996 sales (people can just SC their old ones).
supercharger kit for 996 c2 and c4 is almost done and we are now waiting for custom engine management for the 996. installation of the supercharger only took few hours and it will be available as a kit. i can't wait to drive the car.
I too would be curious to see how the engine holds up as I have come to understand that there is very little overhead in the M96 engine. I for one will commend your bravery and wish you good luck.
Typically I tow my 24' race trailer
Actually, I have not towed anything with this car. I had a 3.4L Boxster that I towed my Jet skis to the lake. We created this hitch system about 5 years ago and we are in the process of re releasing it. We get calls daily for guys who want to buy them so they can tow their tools and tires to track events.
Ben, I have the Fabspeeds on the car. They, in conjunction with the supercharger sound AWESOME. I will call you later about the arrangements for your car.
Do you think you could do 20 consecutive laps of your favorite track, using the redline as you would pre-sc? If not, you've given away something I think every Porsche owner expects- the ability to drive your car to it's limits without faer that you're trashing it. An owner with an SC on his 996 showed up at Gingerman last month. His first season with the car was pretty good. His second hasn't worked out very well. I was looking at his second shredded belt of the week. My guess is that something started to vibrate and got out of line. It'll take a lot of test miles to work out the bugs.
If you really push the car, I think it will be most likely that you'll deconvert it or sell it. If its just for an occasional burst, you may be OK. Hope I'm wrong. Let us know.AS
The usability and track-reliability of a Supercharger installation is just that - the installation and what the bracket and belt system has to offer for longevity. Belts shred form improper pulley systems and bracket movement.
V8huntr let me know when you get done. I'd like to see the install. I've seen you around the Tysons area. I have a 03' Seal Gray Carrera (VA plate KHW)
"V8huntr let me know when you get done. I'd like to see the install. I've seen you around the Tysons area. I have a 03' Seal Gray Carrera (VA plate KHW)"
Heck yes, I'd love to see that installation too! I'm in the McLean area, and am willing to drive anywhere in the DC metro to take a look.

Ben/v8huntr
I second Carlos, please let us know when you two have some time to show off your improvments. Sorry v8 I assumed you where closer in by my sightings. Do you know where Stanardsville is? My family has a loghouse there just off 29.
I'll be having the supercharger installed in my '00 996 cab in the next 2-3 weeks, I'm down here in Charlottesville. Once I have the car back feel free to come down and check it out. I'm hoping to have it at the Shenandoah Region autocross on October 18th, so if you want to see it in action come there!
Scott
Hey Scott,
Long time no talk! Very interesting to hear you're getting the SC also.
If I can't lay my eyes on one in the metro area, I'll make the short drive down to C'ville and check out yours.
So are you Virginia guys sending your cars to AZ, or is someone around here doing them for you?
=Carlos=
I'm sending it to Arizona. Ben is out West. Not sure if someone else here is getting it done (?). In any case, my car should ship out there next week!
Early Christimas for me!
I'm particularly keen to see how a Vortech S/C is as it appaers the power is more on higher revs it won't be my first choice as I would have run for an Eaton roots type with less lag however I can be convinced.
Whould this vendor happen to be TPC in Glen Burnie, MD? They are just a few miles away from me and do alot of 996 993 supercharging.
Oh and I have a house in the mountains about 45 minutes from Charlottesville near White Hall and Crozet.
scott and my vendor is evo (
www.evoms.com
). they have a fantastic and well deserved reputation for quality and customer service.
"They are just a few miles away from me and do alot of 996 993 supercharging."
no they )tpc) don't. 993 yes, 996 just (empty) promises. i don't know who v8hunter's vendor is but it isn't tpc. tpc's product is mere vaporware and has been for WELL over a year now.
wouldn't this be about the only tuner in MD who fulfills this:
"this tuner has done lots of other exotic supercharger and turbo charger systems."
http://www.autothority.com/new_items.htm
just curious why you would have gone with a custom setup for the same money as evoms.com which is not custom (ie: more R&D, more replacement parts, more experience installing, etc)?
Thanks for all the inputs guys but autothority is not the one. I'll post as it goes.
BTW, this thread isn't about advertising so let's just keep it simple.
That is the same BIG @SS Centrifugal procharger SC in my 968. The thing I love about these is it takes about 20 minutes to pull out and change the self contained oil.
What RPM range are you guys hitting high Boost? I am running stock 11:1 compression with low 5Lbs of boost and achieved 120HP over stock with the Motronics ECU and reprogrammed chip.
Can you see your Blow off valve in the engine bay?
I love the driveability of my car I think you will too! Good luck.
Hey Ben what's up! Thanks I have made several changes to the car sinse you saw it last... Supercharger started to clack at the FOS so I had it RMA'ed back to Procharger...I added the Charley arms and caster blocks...Had my Bumperettes color matched by Eric Sklut hmmm powdercoated the plumbing in the engine bay... I think that is it.
Any new mods?
Sandoval, yup from MB! Did you make it down this year to the GA? Was your car in the Concourse? I happened to win the Peoples Choice Concours again this year.
Whoopee! I don't think I'll enter next year.
Well second year in a row my Money Pit did not make it down! I had plans to win the PC this year too! I actually took the day off on Friday to Prep the car when I ended up going through all the BS...It prohibited me from attending I was so pissed I said F'it if the car is not going I'm not going! Small world Between you and Ben in SD...right here all this time. Your car is sick I can't see another car beating it out!
SANDOVAL, by the looks of your engine bay, if the rest of your car is indicative of the same detail, I don't think you would have had any problems winning your class.
I'll see you at the Concourse next year, as a spectator. Maybe. (Sorry for getting off topic)
"Any new mods?"
Yep, just changed the suspension (again), it's being SC'd together with stronger clutch and lightweight single mass flywheel. I'm thinking about doing the brakes (again).
