Probably spend it on a really clean 944T, pursuant to that avenue.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have both so I can offer some perspective.
It really depends in what you want from the car. Properly equipped with the right rubber, either will be fine in foul weather. The rear traction provided by the 911 is offset by the fact that if you do get loose, it will be harder to recover. I would prefer the 928 in foul weather. I think it comes down to what else do you want from the car?
An older 911 is a pure sports car. Lighter, more nimble, and lacking in creature comforts relative to the 928. Its handling is very quirky with regards to its weight bias, this will be either fun or intimidating depending on the driver. Older 911s handle very differently from a 996.
The 928 feels heavy in comparison but is rock solid from a handling perspective. Very difficult to upset. A great highway cruiser.
Transmission choices might also come into play. If you want an automatic, get the 928 as the early Tiptronics were horrible. Only 4 or 5 shift maps and much slower than than the manual trannies of similar vintage. Manual in either car is fine.
Drive both and see what you like better.
Great thoughts. I like my 996, but a hatch back, auto tranny, red-light to red-light car on a rainy day (like today) sure has appeal. Snow's not an issue in BHAM. Got wifey's X5 for that anyway, should need arise.
Read that article. That's what really sparked my interest in the 928.
Since you already have a porsche that you love for nice days, wouldn't it make a lot more sense to buy something more comfortable for your wet weather beater? I suspect an old 911 isn't much fun to drive in monsoon style rain.
i currently has a 996 tip cab.
great car, but i am looking for more. not a concourse-winner, but a truly road-runner.
so far, i focus on boxsterS, 87-89 911
good luck with your find, let me know how it works out.
You'll love the 928 if that's what you're after. An 87-91 S4 variant won't cost much more than a decent 968 and its a much better car. (I also had a 968 up until 2 weeks ago)
Unless you are able to do much of your own maintainance the 928 will eat you alive with expenses. I have owned an '86 928S and enjoyed it very much, but it is a very complex car , built with fairly old technology , so it takes a fair amount of work to keep up.
It was wonderful in the snow with good snow tires - nearly unstoppable and a gas to drive.
Yes.. I'd say that's a fair statement about a lot of models. I had a 944T that needed constant attention, seemingly (wish I had it back, now). I think I agree with the statments about an older 911 being a little less comfortable for my second P-Car purchase. I have a Yukon for the everyday stuff, but would like another P-Car for that too. As covered in another thread- Both mine are black and I love it- just sucks having the 996 all slicked up and not wanting to take it out because of the forecast, but not wanting to drive myself around in the truckster either. Seems like there's only one good solution- Beater Porsche of some sort!
I'd like an older c2 964 turbo with lot's of mods and all of the heavy stuff removed. Prefer white.................... I missed one on ebay a while back and have been kicking myself.
928s are great in foul weather because of the way the transmission sits at the back, and obviously the 600 pound engine in the front helps the front tires. Each board type will give your "their" car choice. If DON'T work on cars, and are used to a relatively new Porsche without their old hangups like relays, wiring, belts, etc, then a 928 may be a frustration. They are NOT complex though. New cars are complex. Older cars are simply a bit worn no matter what you replace. For 20k, you could get a VERY NICE 928S4 (auto or manual VERY different cars even then) They could have heated seats, heated mirrors, rear defroster, rear wiper, headlight sprayers, etc.
I can't think of any porsche besides a cayenne that would be a good foul weather vehicle. But especially not an older 911. does anyone out there have one where the defroster works well ?
My 88's AC and defroster are worthless for the most part. I would say any fewc vehicle woud be better if you insisted on a P car.
