This will point towards the flywheel end of the engine when installed correctly and is correct for both banks.
Leading evidence: 'Install correctly and is correct' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean off enough carbon' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The top of the piston is actually symmetrical so the piston valve reliefs will work on both banks when installed with the piston pin offset in the correct orientation.

Clean off enough carbon from the top of the piston to reveal the directional arrow.

The top of the piston is actually symmetrical so the piston valve reliefs will work on both banks when installed with the piston pin offset in the correct orientation.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello.. working on 02 996 3.6, factory pistons have markings on the face but Mahle says they dont have any information on orientation since they were manufactured for Porsche and Porsche would have added any etchings and not Mahle.
Can anyone confirm the direction of factory pistons? (*** The intake and exhaust reliefs are nearly identical so you cannot just look at the relief to know which one is intake and which is exhaust)
They are directional
Clean off enough carbon from the top of the piston to reveal the directional arrow. This will point towards the flywheel end of the engine when installed correctly and is correct for both banks.
Do you have a picture of the arrow? Where exactly is the arrow and what does it look like? I know Mahle does this on their pistons but not sure if this happened on Porsche's.. Assuming all pistons are the same, how would an arrow pointing to the flywheel make sense if all intake valves are on the top of the heads?
There are marks etched/engraved on top and bottom of the reliefs but Im not inclined to share that info yet because I'd like to find out what others say on this..
Thanks for the response
There is no visible arrow, however there are marks at the top and bottom at the reliefs.. but what do the marks mean(for 100% certain)?? I dont speak German and dont want to guess
The top of the piston is actually symmetrical so the piston valve reliefs will work on both banks when installed with the piston pin offset in the correct orientation. Here are a couple pics where you can see the directional arrow.
Mine have the I and X marks only, no arrow... can you confirm that the I is for intake and the X is for exhaust based on your arrows?? Yes the piston pin offset is my concern
Thanks
EDIT: I do see an arrow on the piston next to the X.. ok this is getting better.. I will confirm and get back
There is going to be an arrow on the top of the piston. As there is no dedicated intake or exhaust side of the this piston design, the "I" doesn't equate to intake. In fact, "E" is actually used in those scenarios where there is an asymmetrical piston. E=Einlass=Inlet (not exhaust!). The pin offset is 1mm further away from the arrow side of the piston than the "I" side (or 1mm closer to the "I" side if you want to look at it that way). You could measure and hand mark the pistons.
I do have an arrow and I will confirm in a bit.. I wanted to add there is another way to tell orientation by the piston pin.. There is a larger recess on the side you have to load in the circlip when you put in bank 2 pistons, so that gives you orientation for bank 2 which will be the same for bank 1, ie gives you the offset in relation to top and bottom etc..
Correct, the counterbore will be on the pulley side of the engine for both banks. On the earlier 3.4 liter and smaller engines, the pistons have a counterbore on both sides so you can't follow that, however, they also have an asymmetrical top.
Here's the pics...we can see that the arrow points to the right in the first pic and the last pic of the back shows the offset on the left side(Im guessing that is the offset side since there is a recess on that side and not the other), which is the right side when flipped over.. so the offset is supposed to be on the flywheel side on bank 2 (these are bank 2 pistons since bank 1 is still on the rods).. so to clarify the offset goes on flywheel side on both banks? I haven't had time to look at the arrows on bank 1
Well, the offset goes to the sky or the floor based on how they are oriented in the engine. Here's a very old illustration that was once provided by our friends at Andial.
Unfortunately, the 3.4 pistons are a very different design where you install based on the intake valve pocket, not the pin offset and directional arrows. That's why they have pin clip tool counter bores on both sides of the pin boss. However, great pics!
Got bank 1 installed.. the arrow next to the X is oriented toward the top of the motor pointing to the flywheel.. so bank 2 will be the opposite/upside down, the X toward the bottom of motor, since all pistons are the same.. this means that the exhaust reliefs on bank 1 are the intake reliefs on bank 2.. so where exactly is this piston "offset"? front/back top/bottom?
This would also mean the cylinders are offset?
As long as you posted those piston pics..
Looks like a nice detailed pic of piston crown, unless my old eyes are deceiving me.
See the erosion & tiny pits on piston crown, and edge of piston that lost its sharp edge in places,,, IMHO, that piston has been mildly detonated and had preignition, maybe not enough to totally destroy the piston, but the signs are there.. Might want to address that problem before running the 'new build'...
You did not show us the piston skirt, but knowing how 3.6 pistons look after just 60,000 miles, wondering how the skirt coating looks...?
and if you're using old oem lokasil block.?
