Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

If it's only making the noise right when you start lowering the top and everything else works normally, I'd start by lubricating the pivot points and checking the clamshell hinges.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

'04 996TT Cab, will momentarily squeak or emit a little squeal when I first try to lower it. It has done it for 2-3 years. I've never added fluid, lubed or checked anything. It does not do it when raising only when first trying to lower. Sounds like it's coming from the rear, could be the clam shell, IDK, keep forgetting to check what it might be. Top always function well.

POST 2Original post

@nick49 I have a document that details lubricating the cab top parts. Send me your email address in a private message and I'll send it to you. I don't think I can attach it here.

POST 3Original post

If it's only making the noise right when you start lowering the top and everything else works normally, I'd start by lubricating the pivot points and checking the clamshell hinges. A dry hinge or pivot is a lot more likely than the hydraulic system if it's been doing the same thing for a couple of years without getting worse. I'd also take a look at the hydraulic fluid level while you're in there, but my guess is it's something mechanical that's just dry.
