Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ordered the "Design Key" from Suncoast and it will unlock the door's, open the trunk, but won't turn the car over? The key fits and turns on the radio, but the engine won't start. Anyone had this problem? Thanks.

POST 2Original post

Inside your original key, there is a transmitter - small device that looks like a tic tac. This is a security device, and is specific to your car. Without the transmitter in the area, the car will not start. So if you cut a key to match, it may open the door...but won't start the car. Pop open one of your old keys and transfer it over. I did the same thing and have the same key head that you have now. Works great and i love the look!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks JC. I will check the old key when I get home. Do you just pop it out or do I need to be careful I don't break it or anything? Having the 911 part of it light up red is pretty cool!

POST 4Original post

You can just pop it out like your changing the battery.

POST 5Original post

nice. i am actually thinking of getting this one: http://www.carnewal-europe.com/cpx_p96185.htm

POST 7Original post

sweeeeeeet!!! now i dont have to think which one to get!

POST 8Original post

how do you get the metal part of the key so clean and shiny? is it new or did you use some sort of a cleaner to remove all the dirt from it?

POST 9Original post

For those who care, this 2-button remote WILL work with one button cars such as my 99... Of course the other button isnt of use, but you get the light up 911 and a sharper key... I was goign to do it because i have no 2nd key, but it would cost me around $250 YIKES!!

POST 10Original post

Thats ok. I do have a 2nd key but it has never worked! Think I need a battery or something.

POST 11Original post

I didn't use any cleaner, just wiped it off. It's been a while since I did the conversion and took that pic, but I know I didn't use any cleaner. You can use your old key and swap everything out. It cost me around $100 ( group buy though).

POST 12Original post

I know i could use my old key, but i want a 2nd key.... Just incase I ever lock them in the car or lose one/leave one somewhere -Keith

POST 13Original post

Incidentally, do they make one that only has one button for us MYI car-owners? I know it's a little compulsive, but I kinda dislike the notion of having a dead button on the key.

POST 14Original post

Neither of my keys work have changed the batteries, no help. They worked the first day I had the car,Ideas? Thanks

POST 15Original post

This is one of the very few mods I just do not understand. My key is either in the car, in which case I do not experience the key tactically or visually, or in my pocket, in which case the modded key does nothing particularly advantageous over the stock key like vibrating when you need that little "extra" excitement in your life. Now, I am also a big fan of to each his or her own, so no criticism per se from me, but why do you guys want this? Are you plopping your keys down on the starbucks counter to impress the shorties?

POST 16Original post

No there is no updated key for 1-button owners... You could retrofit the trunk release maybe?? That would be awesome! That or think of something else you would want to do via remote...Im sure you could have something done with it... The look and the light up 911 are worth the excess button; no one will see it! -keith

POST 17Original post

I'm not clear on the details, but I think after replacing the battery you have to get the key programmed or something. I think this is something only a dealer can do?

POST 18Original post

Nope, don't need the dealer to reprogram a battery replacement.....just if you have a NEW key. That would be a VERY pricey battery replacement.

POST 19Original post

Where is the best place to find these batteries? Does Walgreens or local radio shack usually carry them, or do I need to go to the dealer?

POST 21Original post

I have found these keys to be somewhat unpredictable. There are things you can try..like resetting (to do this insert the battery backwards for 15 seconds then install correctly). But sometimes they need re-programmed. Also have heard if you have a second key and don't use it for a while it may need to be re-programmed after "some time".

POST 22Original post

My first guess is one of two problems: 1. You put the battery in with the wrong polarity (results from placing it in the opposite way it was removed). 2. You have a weak contact inside the key (ie, battery too loose from a bent contact, etc.) If neither of those is the cause then we'd have to move on to the next set of troubleshooting items.........

POST 23Original post

TD I agree it's pretty silly, my wife was not at all impressed when I showed her. No one sees it but me. It's just one of those things I wanted and is a petty little indulgence. Some of us spend just as much on scotch or wine and have nothing to show for it in the morning but a headache.

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Being the second owner of the car, my key was a little "beat-up". Plus the silver on the key almost matches the color of my car with the painted interior and all. And I don't have any other keys attached to this one, so I figured what the hell. Why not have a nice looking key to go with the nice looking car. Rob- No need to put the key down just park up front!!

POST 25Original post

This is a very accurate statement in a sense! I was at the dealer the other day and the guy was getting a replacement battery. Before they did the swap, they warned him that sometimes the key needs to be reprogrammed after they switch out the battery, and that costs 1hr labor... He said, well if you are doing it, and i dont even touch the key, and you try it and it needs prgrammed, do i still have to pay for the reprogram...She said YES... I was boggled that's for sure! I guess the dealer likes to take advantage of the things we have no choice over

POST 26Original post

i hate having anything in my pockets. so when i get to work, i empty my pockets out: cell phone, car key, etc... - and throw it all on my desk. i just like how they key looks, and i would look at it a lot during the day. i noticed past few weeks, with the porker key sitting on my desk in front of me, i been leaving work a bit early
