Interesting, ill change the switch and starter relay first before since those are quicker/simple and see if that does the trick before I do the starter since having to take the plenum apart etc is a bit of a pain.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Having an issue with my 99 996. Car failed to start today but the starter motor kept going, even when i pulled the key out of the ignition. My ignition switch has shown no sign of failing and has been working well - key is smooth to turn and radio/accessories shut off when i pull the key out. I had to disconnect my battery to get the starter motor to turn off. Is the culprit a bad/failed started solenoid necessitating a new starter? I figure ill change my ignition switch as well while I'm working on the car. The car did this once before a few weeks ago but the starter shut off after a few seconds and i was able to start the car and it has been starting fine since - until today. Starter motor is a smooth whirr - do not suspect that my flywheel teeth have broken off. If i do buy a starter - do i get the bosch OE or the SEG? Both are available on FCP euro and similarly priced. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

That sounds more like a sticking starter solenoid than the ignition switch, especially since the starter kept spinning even after the key was removed. I'd still replace the ignition switch while you're in there since they're inexpensive and known to fail, but I'd be looking at the starter first. I'd go with the Bosch unit if the price is about the same. It's the OE supplier and I've had good luck with them.

POST 3Original post

Yeah sounds like the starter solenoid contacts stuck together ...... Have the Battery thoroughly tested, A low voltage will cause a "high amperage" that can weld the contacts together..( Ohm's Law ) Get the Bosch starter..

POST 4Original post

Only get a brand new Bosch starter. Not re-man. I went cheap and got a Bosch re-man. Within a year the entire bendix broke. You can get a new Bosch starter on Amazon.

Agree ^^^^^ 996 Bosch Starter: Bosch number SR0808N,is new. SR0808X is rebuilt, not recommended. Only get NEW. I have also read that "New" Bosch is also the best rule for an alternator, but get the larger version. Upgrade to the 997 alternator with 150 amps. and direct fit. 997 Alternator AL0815N, BOSCH AL0815N Original Equipment. Never get a Re-Man, only NEW. (has letter N as last digit). Both are on Amazon and others. I don't know if there is a solenoid-repair-kit or something like that. $Runner had a bad no-start issue, sporadic, got the $18 Solenoid kit. Took it apart, new contacts, etc, cleaned, reassemble, works fine now. Much less cost than a new starter. YMMV

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the replies everyone, I'll go ahead and order the bosch starter.

And I found the remanufactured Bosch alternator sucked. Replaced it with a new one and voltage has been where it is supposed to be ever since.

POST 8Original post

I saw a reply I think to pelicans parts write up of a guy that had the same happen and it ended up being the switch

Interesting, ill change the switch and starter relay first before since those are quicker/simple and see if that does the trick before I do the starter since having to take the plenum apart etc is a bit of a pain. Ordered a new starter anyway, can always return it if I dont need it.
