Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Apparently the owner was 'very ****', slightlest hint of noise ,damage to paint etc, it was in being repaired 'like a shot'.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, I'm just about to purchase a 1999 996 C2 with 64K miles, new tyres, clutch FPSH etc. Apparently the owner was 'very ****', slightlest hint of noise ,damage to paint etc, it was in being repaired 'like a shot'. The 'problem' I have, is getting a 'handle' on the RMS and the intermediate shaft problem. How much of a problem is this? I'm used to oil leaks I have a 1990 964! I'm really not concerned if the only 'damage' is marks on the drive! Or does clutch contamination, or some other internal failure occur if this goes unchecked? (Obviously keeping an eye on the oil level and topping up as necessary). Bottom line, are these items such an issue that I would be better off buying another MY, or make of car? I realize that I have to spend money on maintainance, but is this to such a level (because of the above) to be prohibitive for a 'toy' ? Thanks P.s I've done a search which makes the above question even more pertinent!

POST 2Original post

I'm on my second 996, a few months ago I had an RMS leak that was repaired. I believe it happened after my C4S sat in the garage for 3 weeks. Before that I had never left either of my 996's idle for 3 weeks. So it's my experience that if you drive them you're better off. I would not hesitate to purchase a 996 because of the RMS issues. Rob

RMS is an overated issue with these cars but its an inexpensive fix. If the car you are looking at is solid, no need to worry about the RMS leak.
