Hey you motorcycle owners, what would you recommend for a first time bike owner with ZERO riding experience?

can't change a sportbike dude into a cruiser(I use to track my GSXR-750 at Shannonville)...in any case I just didn't understand why the cruiser guy loved their open faced helmets...I personally don't like bug soup.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have noticed from time to time that P. owners seem to also own motorcycles - is this the need for speed? I will confess to owning a 1000cc Suzuki GSXR as my 2nd favourite toy. What I can never understand when riding the bike are WRX/EVO0 owners who try to drag the bike off at the lights. Zero to 60mph in under 3secs, who are they kidding. Never, never try to race a bike even in a Porsche.
So lets hear what bikes are ridden out there.
I ride as well, I have an 03 GSXR-750.I have played with other bikes in the car not 1/4 mile but top speed, our Porsche do pretty well against a bike at over 240 K ( for those of you whom are boy scouts it was on a track) for those of you who don't give a **** what others do it was on the highway. Pick which one doesn't upset you and use that. I don't want to hear its wrong to ride/drive at those speeds.I agree that Porsche guys have a need for speed
15 Bikes in the last 15 years for me. There's nothing else out there that can give you that massive acceleration. My last big bike was a Kawi ZRX1200. Now I'm down to a CRF250 and a 72 Triumph Bonnie that I work on more than ride, but thats part of the fun for me. There are so many good bikes out there these days its hard to choose. I'm wating for a really good (powerfull) Supermotard for the street. KTM is getting close.
Yes, there is something out there that accellerates as fast as a bike.
It's called a blown Viper (DLM supercharged -> Florida tuner).
Not kidding. There's even some footage on the web of the Viper hanging in with a Busa.
1982 Harley Davidson FXR.
I told myself this would be the last motorcycle I would buy new. So far I am right. After owning other Harleys, Triumphs, AJS, BSA, Royal Enfield, Yamaha and Honda, I still prefer to ride my old Harley.
The only thing that sounds as good as a Harley is a Ryan PT22 running a Kinner engine.
Might consider getting an old Hydro-Glide some day to restore.

Ducati 998 - You think Pcars chew up their tires quick? $300 might get me about 2k miles!
Nothing beats the feeling of a bike, although aerobatics is a whole different level
There was a video of a race between a 996 and a Yamaha R-1 around a track in Germany....The P-car won. The Bike couldn't go into the turns as fast as the Porsche. Anyway, I have owned a couple of GSXR-1000,s and a CBR 900 but now I get my speed thrills in the car. I have a CR-250 which is thrilling and a H-D Heritage Springer that is chromed out.
I saw it too bro, the thing is in turns you have 4 tires and way more traction. You can also slow down way better. It was super close but the liter bike couldn't catch him down the straightaway before the finish even though he had a much better HP/WT ratio. In high speed turns it isn't even close. P-car won. I think it was on of those European shows.
yes, I've felt that rush...but it was ON THE GROUND...ending my biker days. I think the biggest rush was lying on the ground taking inventory: legs, check. Hands, check. Able to wiggle toes..Check.
I've been there, except not everything checked out. But I still ride (some wind out of my sails, however), it's in the blood. If you don't have it, you wouldn't understand.
yeah, i still get the itch. I tell myself if I get a new Duc I'll only drive it at night, when the old ladies (like the one who hit me) are in sleepy land. But once you start taking crack, you want more crack...I'd be driving all over the place in no-time.
Use to track a GSXR-750 and loved it but honestly I can't deal with all the bad (read minivan) drivers on the highways. Went back to my first love, dirt bike : KTM 300 EXC. The max I rode it was only in the 90's MPH but...it was on a dirt road
it is hard for cars to beat a late model sports bike on twisties, I can not imagine how a p-car can win on that provided the rider knows his stuff. The bikes do need the whole track to hit the apex and entrance and exit so I am guessing the presence of a solid metal vehicle might have inhibited the rider to pick the line. I wish there is a stream video on that so I can see for sure what had happened.

There is a thread on
Motorcycle.com
that has a pretty nice write-up of cars versus motorcycles. Having both, I can agree full out that no street bike is ever going to lose to a street car on a track. Just way too much horsepower to weight and not that much of a deficiency in the corners. Sorry, guys, but a 996 is a pure joy to drive; but a sportbike is biblical when it comes to speed.
I had an 04 CBR1000RR for street fun (replaced my 01 ZX9R which I put
65,000 miles on in 4 yrs.)
a GSXR600 for the track
and an 86 V65 Magna for cruzin
Got rid of them all after my "last" wreck which required 3 screws in
my left ankle to fix......that's why I bought the 996......
I
hate
to break the bubble , but the regular 996 (not turbo/GT2/GT3 or GT) beats the bike (a Yamaha R1 for example) readily. If the track is something as simple as a nascar track (round, round, round .... round) then yeah,
maybe
the bike may beat the Porsche. But make the track more technical, and the car with 4 wheels (wider base) can turn thru corner a LOT faster than anything on 2 wheels can hope to.
The bikes loses mostly due to :-
Power being delivered only via 1 wheel (rear)
Braking is also similarly achieved over half the number of tyres.
Adding to 1 and 2 is the fact that car tyres are flat in the cross section compared to bike tyres which are rounded. This means a smaller contact patch for the bike which is bad for both braking as well as power delivery.
Handling and stability is poorer on the bike since the car has width (left wheel-center weight-right wheel ) to bank on.
Some cool clips ..
Bike losing on an
ordinary track
vs a stock Porsche 996 C4. This is the video that I think a few others were talking about. This is a C4 on a dry track (mean its slower than a regular C2 on dry track!). BTW, I love Top Gear and Jeremy Clarkson as a host ! Amazing shows !!
A Bike losing on a
straight stretch
(vs, however, a F1 car !!)
Bike losing on a
straight stretch
vs a Porsche Turbo (and a fighter jet). The bike pulls ahead initially but then the turbo comes back and wins.
If you say "Suzuki hayabusa" (bike speed crown for other folks), sure, you get more top speed but you TOTALLY lose out on handling ! There isin't enough freedom of design on a motorcycle to beat a high end sports car.
And I'm not a car guy bashing the bikes. I love my bike - but know I can't win against a high end sports car. Here are some snaps of my ride
Gotta love San Diego beaches

Every so often, I see a bike that I instantly know I will own. The last one was Ducati's 900 Monster in 1995. Saw this one today and it stopped me in my tracks. Oh yes it will be mine haa haa haa haaa.........
03 Honda Valkyrie (4K miles)...last year they made it. Going up for sale. Don't ride it now that I have the P car. Yes you get a different rush out of the wide open ride...but priorities and likes/dislikes change over time, and mine have. Chuck
that duc sport 1000 is one of the hottest bikes out imo, next to the the new triumph 675........makes me wanna trade my r6..
sids...those vids are incredible!
What were you thinking
I rode a harly once, and only once I thought it would be cool to ride, Yea no it was terrible, not ever going to do that mistake again. I was thinking you can take a sport bike
guy and change him to a cruiser
...Yea not so much
Looks like my 95th anniversary special, same paint scheme.....I put a "potato" cam in it the week before Laconia Bike week.....Torque plus high end HP..........and the new sound is magnificent.
Exactly. This is my first Harley. I grew up on Hondas and Yamahas. The harley is a much different experience than crotch rockets, but they have their own unique appeal. There is a reason so many people are HD fanatics.
Here is my other bike. Looks awful but still goes...1971 Ossa 250
I was simply trying to be reasonalble for a change... You're right
can't change a sportbike dude into a cruiser(I use to track my GSXR-750 at Shannonville)...in any case I just didn't understand why the cruiser guy loved their open faced helmets...I personally don't like bug soup. Fast car, fast bike, fast women (in my dream anyway) and slow food...that's the way.
I like bikes, got a bunch, always had at least one Harley over the last 35 years. Got a '48 and '65 Pan, '71 and '91 Electra Glide, '92 Heritage Softail, '94 Fatboy, a couple of Harley Scoots under construction, and '96 Buell S1. I've had 6 GSXRs that I roadraced over an 8 year period and still have my original '86 SuperBike still shod in Slicks, Marvic magnesium wheels, push start, etc. I also have a rare Honda Factory roadrace bike, a '75 MT125R that I bought new and raced a handfull of times. I've got to be careful as bikes took me away from my last Porsche, an '80 SC Targa that I only drove a thousand miles in over a year so I sold it. I love to ride Harleys, especially the early Evos and older. They are loud, hard edged, poor handling shakers, with under sprung suspensions and bad brakes. It's really fun to push them hard down a twisty canyon road and amaze lesser experienced riders on R1s and the like.
I love my Italian 2 wheeled mistress who could get me in to trouble if I don't pay attention all the time. My Ago is my second MV used for nice twisty roads and track. The other bike is my trusty and dependable K1200RS good for long rides across the country
Hey you motorcycle owners, what would you recommend for a first time bike owner with ZERO riding experience? I'm thinking of either the Suzuki SV-650, the Kawasaki Ninja 650 or the Ducati Monster Dark 620.
That's a beauty, but too much for a newbie like me to handle. Also, I don't wanna spend more then $7,000, as this will be mostly for commuting and I don't want a bike that is too much for me to handle.
Is a Monster 620 friendly to new riders?
Any bike is fine to learn on if you have very solid control over your right wrist. If you don't have control over that, even a lowly Ninja 250 could kill you in a heartbeat (well, maybe 2 heartbeats, those things are pretty slow).
'01 R6 here
As a first bike I would go with an 883 Harley Sportster. It's a great bike, user friendly, fun, and will take you anywhere. If you fall over, you will not be damageing several hundreds $$$ of bodywork. You should be able to find one a few years old for under $5K. Anything '93 to '02 would be my choice. (Newer models change things too often and may depreciate more) Parts are inexpensive, easy to service and work on, thousands of accessories available to personalize it. Best of all when you outgrow it, it's very easy to sell and you shouldn't loose anything to depreciation.
