I see the 997 as an evolution of the 996 so I don't see any dramatic changes for next year.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Greetings from the land of the 997! Porsche seemes to be supplying very little imformation re the 07 997. Some (many) are wondering if Porsche will continue their pattern of "refreshing" a model line every 2ish years. For the 997, that might be the 07 model. My question for the board is directed at anyone actively shopping the 996 model near the end of the 01 model run or eary in the 02 season. When did the upgrade from the 3.4 to the 3.6 become generally well known? Did a 01 buyer in late spring of 2001 know that a significant "refreshment" was immiment? When did potential 02 buyers become informed? What you folk think Porsche should/will do with both the base 997 (3.6) anf the 997S (3.8) for 07? TIA Jack

POST 2Original post

Porsche is typically very tight lipped about future model and leaks information when they want to stir up interest. I see the 997 as an evolution of the 996 so I don't see any dramatic changes for next year. They will probably work on the PASM to settle some of the complaints. I wish they would make the X-51 option a standard feature. I don't see them pushing the current motor to 3.8L, but who am I? There is definitely room to grow with the current engine. It will be interesting to see what is coming down the pipe for us.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Understand and agree. That's why I'm interested in what happened to serious buyers in the summer between the 01 and the 02. Were there some very disapointed 01 buyers and some very happily surprised 02 buyers or did everyone know the score at time of purchase? Jack

POST 4Original post

Not 100%, but I think the 02 facelift came because of the 911 faithful not liking the fact that the 996 looked like a Boxter. I don't think the other models like the 964 and 993 got facelifts after 2-3 years.

POST 5Original post

I honestly don't see Porsche investing the money to certify a 3.8L motor unless there was a very strong demand. They already have the X-51 package certified and can just as easily make that the standard S motor much as they did the X-50 in the last year of the 996 turbo. The 997 has addressed all of the complaints rained on the 996. They gave it a big *** and made it louder. Noone complained about the handling but they made it better. Everything else is just refinement of an already very well sorted kit.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

villajoe: Fair enough but when did the details of the refresh become widely known. Early: What do you mean by "certify a 3.8 motor". The 997S already has a 3.8. Jack

POST 7Original post

Damn, I must get more sleep. I was thinking about the GT3 motor.

POST 8Original post

We were looking to order a car in early summer 2001 and test drove a 2001. We knew of changes to the 2002 car from the dealer and enthusiast mags and settled on the specs for a 2002 car - as I recall the order couldn't go in until September because Porsche was still finalizing some details. We were told to expect a December or January build date, but got surprised with October 17 instead, and took delivery on December 11.

POST 9Original post

I ordered my car around April 2001 and didn't know about the face lift ( also didn't know about rennlist then ). I took delivery in early June and as I recall I read about the update within days. I'm glad I got a 2001 though, as it's one the best years for the 996 and I don't like the look of the 996 turbo lights on narrow bodies. I wouldn't hold my breath for a 997 update soon. It seems Porsche has their plate full with the 997TT being introduced and base Cayman.

POST 10Original post

Porsche will generally sell their updates and new models in Europe for a year before the US market gets them. If you use that as a guide, you should know around a year before the US gets the change.

POST 11Original post

what i wish is that the 997 will get the 3.8L motor and the S will get the 3.8L x51 standard.

POST 12Original post

well, two years after launch porsche just refreshed the boxsters new boxster 's' has the same power and specs as the cayman 's' - 295hp

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ray S: Did the 996 3.4 to 3.6 upgrade occur in Europe before North America? Thanks Jack

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

P-Car: Was the boxster refresh widely known in Boxster circles before the recent announcement? Jack

POST 15Original post

I don' think so Its got me considering the idea of getting back into a boxster - the new 3.4 is prety much the same as the 3.4 in my 996.....
