Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Cleaned the mass air sensor with electrical cleaner and 3 drives later it went out and has not come back in the last month.
Leading evidence: 'Clean mass air sensor' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean maf at every oil' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I had my MAF replaced by the mech last fall, and was fine for a until a month or two ago.

Suggestion
Yes you will have to reset the CEL...Just disconnect the negative cable from the battery for 5 minutes.

Suggestion
i extracted the MAF and sprayed a heavy soaking of electrical parts cleaner (CRC, i think is the brand) onto it...afterwards, the CEL light stayed on for about 4 or 5 drive cycles then went away and never came back (no disconnecting of the battery)...
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It was a P1123
will I have to have the CEL reset before the ECU will recogise any potential change?
MAF cleaning was suprisingly easy
Maybe it will incentivise me into installing my SSK this weekend
P1123 - Oxygen Sensing Adaptation Area 1 (Cylinders 1 - 3) - Lean Threshold
Which means that side is running too RICH not too lean. "Lean threshold" means the DME can not lean the mixture enough. Could be MAF, O2 sensors, plugs...
Yes you will have to reset the CEL...Just disconnect the negative cable from the battery for 5 minutes. If it comes back you have more work to do...let's hope not.
well, although the CEL is still there the car functions as it should now, for the last couple of months I have had to deal with near-stalls etc
lets hope this has fixed it
I will get it reset
Reading the change in voltage produced by the MAF is proof positive that cleaning it does work. Read the exact voltage after 6 months, clean it and read it again. The difference is the proof.
my MAF gave a CEL last fall. i extracted the MAF and sprayed a heavy soaking of electrical parts cleaner (CRC, i think is the brand) onto it...afterwards, the CEL light stayed on for about 4 or 5 drive cycles then went away and never came back (no disconnecting of the battery)... sometimes MAF's just go bad but it hasn't happened to me yet. --- now, i clean the MAF at every oil change...
Same situation here. Read the codes and I think it was 1129??? Reset the light but within a day it was back on. Cleaned the mass air sensor with electrical cleaner and 3 drives later it went out and has not come back in the last month.

The mostly likely source, i.e. not common to both sides, is a bad O2 sensor
causing the one side to "hang" rich. The key is to monitor the O2 sensors
(front) and the TRA (short term) via an OBDII scanner (very inexpensive now).
I had my MAF replaced by the mech last fall, and was fine for a until a month or two ago.
Now i get a CEL at EXACTLY the same point in my drive home... Central and Mary... about 2-3 miles after leaving work !
It stays on for a few drive cycles then goes off for about a week.
If it stays on long enough for me to get the codes read i'd have a better idea.
Perhaps i can clean the MAF in this case ?
