Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been lurking on the 964 and 996 forums for a while now, and have decided that it is finally time to introduce myself to the forum. A '91 C2 has been my daily drive for sometime now, but with nearly 160,000 miles on the clock it was inevitable that a number of nagging issues would start to surface. I have long dreamed of transforming my 964 into an RS-inspired track day car, and given the list of issues to address (brakes, AC, clutch, and a few oil leaks) it seemed my money would be better spent on track-ready upgrades than daily driver creature comforts. However, before my project (which will become a father/son DIY project over the next few years) could begin, I had to find some new daily transportation. Luckily my wife's response was, "we have to have another Porsche before you can start disassembling the 964!" My search for a new daily driver was quickly focused on either a "facelifted" 996 or a 997. Although I have been dreaming of a 997 C2S since its release, my budget limited me to the base model C2, and even that was going to be a stretch if I wanted to stay "in plan". I was fortunate enough to find a nice silver '05 C2 with Nav, CD changer, Bose, and a few other nice options for $71,900. However a test drive left me a bit underwhelmed. My 964 had conditioned me to expect a much more "raw" 911 driving experience, and mod'd with a chip, cup-pipe muffler bypass, and cup airbox the 964 was also much more pleasing aurally. The whole family (wife and kids included) left the dealership disappointed. Fortunately our disappointment would not last. Just one day later I found the car I would buy at Select Luxury in Marietta, GA. It is a guards red '03 C2 with aerokit II and a number of mods that really made the difference (but also leave me with a few questions). The first thing I noticed is the reduced ride height. I doubt the car is lowered via the factory sport suspension as I seem to recall reading that it wasn't really much lower than stock (BTW, Select Luxury did not have the original sticker, but I am hoping that the local dealer who originally sold the car when new, can provide a list of factory options). The ride height is much closer to that of the MkII GT3. So it looks like I am going to have to pull a wheel and try to determine its origin from markings on the components. After the car is started the next thing noticed is the exhaust note. The exhaust has obviously been mod'd as well, and the result is a throaty note that isn't too loud, and causes no unwanted resonances. Let's call it sporty, but not obnoxous. Once again some investigation will hopefully provide some insight into the origin of the exhaust. Finally, the car is also fitted with a K&N air filter. The result of these modest mods were exactly what was needed to provide just that bit of "rawness" I was looking for, without loosing the necessary refinement that makes the water-cooled 911s such a great daily drive. Combine those qualities with the beautiful guards red finish and head-turning aerokit II bodywork, and the result is simply fantastic. My initial test drive was so much more fulfilling than my ride in the base 997. As I drove it off the lot and headed home, I felt like nothing less than a 16 year old boy who just stumbled onto his father's secret stash of Playboy magazines. And to compare it yet again to the '05 base 997, it cost me $56,500. Exactly $15,400 less than the 997. More fulfilling... less money... that is a great a combination in my book! So finally, I want to thank all of you who post to the board. Without knowing it, you all were a great help as I tried to learn the important things to keep an eye out for as I selected a car. I don't know if I will be able to post about too many future mods, as many of the mods I would have wanted are already on the car. However, I will probably post a running report on my 964 rebuild (on the 964 forum of course) once I get started. BTW, I've also figured out that proper etiquette requires me to post pics... so ENJOY! (and hopefully my picture posting works)

POST 2Original post

Nice collection. The 996 looks great, it definitely looks lowered. It sounds like you might have the Sport Exhaust. The turbo rims were also something the previous owner added. The red looks great. Overall, the 996 aerokit is definitely more visually appealing than a base 997. Congrats!

POST 4Original post

Congrats. Beautiful 996! Let us know what you find beneath that lovely skin! (Nice C2 also!)

POST 5Original post

Just a note those are Sport Techno wheels, not turbos!

POST 6Original post

Rob - Welcome to the Porsche Phunny Pharm and Congrats on getting a beautiful 996. Thanks for sharing the pics!

POST 7Original post

Great looking car. Nice to pick one up with the mods already (correctly) done. Looks great in red, especially with the aero kit. Congrats.

POST 8Original post

Correct. They were an option for the C4S. Cars look great!!

POST 9Original post

Congrates! Great looking car. You may not have to wait for, and/or deal with, the original dealer to determine the factory options. Look under the hood of the car for a rectangular white sticker with a bunch of 3 digit codes. These codes represent the factory options. There a few option decoders on the internet or post them here and someone more than likely can tell what they represent.

POST 10Original post

Nice addition to the family!! BTW I love the wheels on the 964. Have fun fixing her up with your son.

POST 11Original post

someone definitely spent the money on the modes before you bought it. nice car.

POST 12Original post

I think I was thinking of the turbo s which had those rims standard...who knows, that's probably wrong too!

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yep, they are Sport Technos. 225s on 8s in front and 295s on 11s on the back.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The wheels on the 964 are 18" Kinesis Super Cups. These are basically a clone of the wheels from the 993 RS.

POST 15Original post

Welcome and congrats! I bought my 996 from Select Luxury as well.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yep, I took your positive comments about Select Luxury into consideration before I purchased from them. Thanks.

POST 20Original post

Good looking car, Congrats and welcome to the 996 Family...

POST 21Original post

How was Select to work with ? I used to live in Marietta (now South Florida) and drove by their lot almost daily. Please PM me or respond here. Thanks, FD

POST 23Original post

I also bought my 996 at Select Luxury 16 months ago via the internet & phone. When I drove to Marietta (4 hours one way) to pick up the car, it was exactly as advertised. They were very easy to work with and I would not hesitate to do business with them in the future if they had a car I wanted.
