The proper function of the valve activation can be tested by eith inatlling a "tee" inline on the hose going between the 2 valves and reading vaccum with a gauge.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I will be getting it fixed next monday and can let you know the issue then ....
I posted a question several days ago regarding this and didn't get much response.
So I am curious, so no one had their check engine light go off because of secondary air injection problem?
The Check engine light came on again after I reseted the light after two days. Again it reads secondary air injection. So I wanted to post this question again.
TIA
P0410 -- Secondary Air Injection System - Signal Implausible (Cylinders 1 - 3)
Secondary air injection pump is not triggered.
Potential causes:
Wiring harness or fuse
If you also get a P1411
Then add:
Secondary air injection pump does not work. - Relay
Air supply lines restricted. - DME control module
Electric change-over valve does not work. - Air supply lines
Air change-over valve does not work. - Secondary air injection pump
Vacuum system leaks. - Electric change-over valve, - Air change-over valve
Loren,
Thanks for the feed back, the air pump is working as I can hear the high pitch "vaccum cleaning" sound during cold start up. What's bizzar is that the CEL light is always triggered after the air pump have finished's cold start cycle. So far out of the 3 times the light came on I never received a P1411 error.
So exactly where do I start looking? I can see the air pump and couple of valves, but that's all.
Here are the components of the air injection system...
1 - Secondary air pump
2 - Vacuum reservoir
3 - Overflow valve
4 - Non-return valve
5 - Vacuum valve
6 - Non-return valve
And the routing...
1 - Secondary air injection pump
2 - Air change-over valve
3 - Electric change-over valve
4 - Non-return valve
5 - To the cylinder heads
6 - Vacuum reservoir
7 - To the intake air system
If the air pump works then:
1. Check for vacuum leaks.
2. Check electric changeover valve (item 3 in routing image).
3. Check air changeover valve (item 2 in routing image).
Loren,
Thanks for the outline of the components and the pictures. What I am unsure of is exactly how do you check the function of the listed devices?
(1). Check electric changeover valve (item 3 in routing image). - Just exatly what do I do to check for the function of this changeover valve? Apply vaccum and measure something? Based on the outcome How do I know if it is working or not?
(2). Check air changeover valve, same for this, exactly how I do check for the function of this valve?
TIA
There are 2 changeover valves that control the vacuum routing from the reserve canister, number 2. One valve controls the resonnance valve in the back intake tube and the other controls Item # 5 in the diagram above. In the case of Valve #5, there is a vacuum hose coming from the reseviour to the valve that always has vacuum, whether the engine is running or not. When the valve is NOT activated, vacuum is capped closed at the valve. When the valve is activated, vacuum is passed out of the valve into the second port on the valve and, via a vacuum hose, vacuum opens the air injection valve, allowing forced air from the pump past the valve and into both banks of the engine.
If the changeover valve is not activiate, or IS activated but does not open the air injection valve while the pump is running at cold startup, it may give you your error code. You cannot test for a vacuum leak between the changeover valve and the air injection valve on a warm engine or at anytime other than the frst 2 minutes of startup after the engine is cold since the system is closed after the pump shuts off and there is no vacuum. This hose should be vitually check for leaks or removed and tested. Also, make sure that the electrical connection is installed properly. The proper function of the valve activation can be tested by eith inatlling a "tee" inline on the hose going between the 2 valves and reading vaccum with a gauge. You should have vacuum when the pump is running, only.
There are various methods for reading the fault codes and reseting the check engine light.
(1). Dealer (Major PITA, and major $$$)
(2). NAPA auto parts, free.
(3). Use your own laptop with a OBD2 utility, which you will need to purchase the software and the special OBD2 connector. Do a search engine search you will find hundreds of them.
(4). Handheld scan tool avaliable at most auto parts store now days for under $99
FWIW, an update on the stupid SAI CEL issue, the light continue to come on now even after a reset, usually takes about 1 day to set it off.
Called the dealer to see if this would be covered under the long term California emission warranty and was told that it was not.
So now I put a black dot sticker over the check engine light to cover the stupid idoit light. until I have time to figure this BS out. Since this is my daily driver, so..............
There is no sensor that measures whether air is being pumped into the air tube while the pump is running. (As far as I know). Therefore, if the changeover valve is switching and it's vacuum lnes are intact, I would suspect that all it could be was too much amperage in the pump motor. I would disconnect the rubber hose that is connected to the pump and reset the CEL. If CEL does not return, it would indicate blockage down the line, possably the valve or or check valve. Not having the vacuum line connected properly will cause the same condition.
Hi robin ... same issue / code on on my 99 c4. I will be getting it fixed next monday and can let you know the issue then .... until then, I really like your blk dot idea!!!
The image that Loren put up....( The upper image), #5....Vacuum valve....I have replaced several of these. When it fails, it will give a secondary air code.
Same fault code ... I finally had this checked out on my car. Apparently I need a new check valve and air pump valve. one was corrodded / blocked and one they recommened be changed at the same time ... i dont recall which was which. Parts are about $75 each and labor is $300.
Likely lots of other points of failure but these were mine for this code.
