I have used Mobil 1 75w90, redline 75w90, special mix redline with two different viscousity, and then finally settles on Swepco 201.

When I have filled it I thought you were supposed to fill it until it puked out the fill hole.

Gear oil for our 996

Suggestion

huh I would like Loren to verify because I definitely always use more than he states, however his DIY also states specifically to fill it on level ground until it flows out the bottom of the fill hole, which I always do as I have a level lift-.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Boy and girls, Here is a gear oil that's specifically made for our 996 trans/axle environment with added friction modifier for our synchros to work correctly when cold. It is both GL4 and 5 which is perfect for our transaxle boxes. I haven't had the chance to try this in my 993 yet, as my 993 is shifting perfectly right now (don't want to mess with a good thing), don't know exactly what I have in there, for sure it is Swepco 201 as base and some additive added in. Have over 30k miles on it now, like I said it is shifting perfect, so I am not going to chance it. A little history with the trying different gear oil in my 993... I have used Mobil 1 75w90, redline 75w90, special mix redline with two different viscousity, and then finally settles on Swepco 201. So... back to the original subject. The previous stupif California yuppie owner of my 996 didn't baby the 2nd gear synchros so well, so I was suffering some 2nd gear cold shifting problem. And decided to experienment with some special mix fluid to see if it would help with the symptoms. Long story short, the fluid didn't work out really well at first, actually made it worst... come to find out it was the idoit me that didn't follow the filling capacity by the manual and over filled the slush box. Well, after draining some of the fluid I found the transmission to be in perfect working order. The cold shifing problem is very slight now, almost all gone. So the fluid certainly did what it was advertised to do, from reading the tech information from the web site it does sound very convincing, and I like it. And will be using it in my 996 for now. Just FYI. The fluid is made by a company call Specialty formulations, the web site is: http://specialtyformulations.com/ Here is the link to the data sheet on the product that I used. POST 2Original post

so you can actually overfill the tranny???? When I have filled it I thought you were supposed to fill it until it puked out the fill hole. This however used more fluid than posted via Loren's DIY. I thought this was because I had a LSD in my tranny and it used more like the gt3?????? I would like to hear Loren's comment on this stuff.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Definitely! Especially when you jack the car up on the jack stand. the book calls for 2.7 liter which is only 2.85 quarts. I was able to get 4 quarts in there by following the old school method of filling it until it comes out of the drain hole. What's interesting is the 993 calls for about 4 quarts and it is exactly 4 quarts until it overflows out of the drain hole.

POST 4Original post

huh I would like Loren to verify because I definitely always use more than he states, however his DIY also states specifically to fill it on level ground until it flows out the bottom of the fill hole, which I always do as I have a level lift-. Thoughts? Loren?

POST 5Original post

If the car is level, you fill it all the way until it is at the bottom of the fill hole. This is about 2.7 liters. OBVIOUSLY, if you fill it when the car is not level, the amount you get in there will be different...either more or less and is not good. Before draining, insert your finger in the fill hole to see if the fluid is to ther level of the hole. If it is, your car is level enough. If you have LSD, DO NOT use the wrong lube.
