If it's wrap, maybe try removing it (I think you'd probably remove wrap with a heat gun, but check with experts).

Unfortunately, the wood is not durable, was very expensive to replace back when it was available, and is no longer available.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2000 Carrera sahara interior. So I have been trying to find this trim that is missing from my dash defrost and I can't even find any pictures of cars with it? Every 996 I see does not have them? I can find after market pieces but only carbon fiber or "wood" ones but nothing stock looking like black or whatever. Is this in fact aftermarket only or is this in upper level trim package? It was clearly an insert not just stick on top of the dash. Any ideas? Anyone have some for sale?
It looks like somebody potentially has put some kind of "sticker" carbon fiber on the original trim and has since taken it off. So the only thing left is the sticker.
I updated my car years ago from my plastic pieces to leather pieces. I actually have the black leather piece in the middle that I would sell to you if you are interested, I have both the right and left hand side. PM me if you are interested.

While most of us saw your photos as inscrutable as The Dude, good samaritan Paul shows up and penetrates the surface distractions. He offers help! Run with it!
Ya gotta love this forum.
Sorry about the photo, maybe this will help to identify. My is Dash all leather. And looks like someone did in fact put a sticker over whatever there was before.
Yes Paul, I would be interested and will pm you. Thank you. I am still a little confused as to what was there before. Were there leather pieces as you have or nothing and just stickers over. Or the plastic trim you show in the pics?

Paul im guessing since I am so new I can't PM yet. Not sure when thst will happen. I tired to toggle on PM's but it keeps auto toggling off.. How else can I contact you? Don't know if we are allowed to display emails here so will wait
These were available with an inlaid section of carbon, or various wood finishes. See

First the color is Savanah Beige not Sahara. Attached is a picture on the dash on my 2000 996 with a full leather interior but is not have the full carbon or wood trim. I know there were those trim that might have had trim strips across the dash at the top. Also I think there are some aftermarket trims that you could buy that had stick on trim strips, this may be what you had. are there actual grooves or spaces in the main dash for the trim strips or are they just stuck on.
Sorry yes Savanah,
No they are not stuck on they were inlaid I know the pic is kinda hard to see but there are channels for the trim prices and they are not stickers but actual burl wood pieces. One piece broke the other day from the arm rest and it is ACTUAL moulded hard stiff wood pieces (that's what she said!) not a sticker. Its also full interior, dash, center console, speakers front and rear. I have seen the stickers and these are not them for sure. I have tried to clean whatever it was stick on with and its not coming off easy like a sticker would. So because of age and the unlikely hood of finding replacements it seems I have to go back to stock except I would like black trim instead of all Savanah leather. I'll snap a pic of what the rest of the interior looks like to give you guys an idea.
Ugh, looks awful. Changing interior trim should require a questionnaire you need to fill out first. First question: Is it crappy, fake looking that uses adhesive? Yes? Run away.
Interesting thread. I didn't realize, before seeing your pics and
@Paul Waterloo
's pics, that full leather without the wood or carbon trim options didn't have those trim pieces at all.
It's hard to tell from just a picture, but the carbon fiber trim in your photo looks more like actual carbon fiber to my eye than it looks like a sticker over something else. Further, I wouldn't think that those trim pieces ever existed in plastic since (based on
@Paul Waterloo
's photo) it looks like dashes without special trim didn't have those insets at all. If it was wood trim originally, it would almost certainly be cracked by now, and carbon stickers would not hide that.
What does the rest of the interior trim look like? (e.g. wood, carbon fiber, plain leather/vinyl)
Must habe been expensive at the time as its real inlaid burl wood not sticker crap as you can see from the piece that broke off.. But it hasn't aged well either. I want to change to black but can't find a source. Anyone know of one? Have some extra around?
Real inlaid wood not stickers
Back of piece i broke off. You can see its actual wood.
Or is it call to wreckers and hope someone has something?
What is the carbon fiber trim piece you showed in the prior post? Was that and aftermarket photo or carbon from another 996? If that was actually your original wood trim pieces with carbon look wrap, I'm very shocked that it's intact because that wood trim in particular is pretty fragile being both thin and exposed to sun more than the other bits. It seems like it might be legit carbon fiber, or maybe aftermarket trim. If so, maybe you can trade it with someone as I think carbon fiber has also proved pretty fragile. If it's wrap, maybe try removing it (I think you'd probably remove wrap with a heat gun, but check with experts). Vinyl wrap will show every surface imperfection, so your wood would have to be in great shape underneath to look like that.
What you have definitely real wood. The option is called "Dark Wood Interior Package". It was also available in a lighter wood color, which I don't really like, but the dark wood breaks up the "sea of beige" look you see in some 996 interiors. Unfortunately, the wood is not durable, was very expensive to replace back when it was available, and is no longer available. It looks like the rest of the wood in the radio surround and door handles and elsewhere are in pretty good shape, so hopefully you can keep that (if you want to). I don't know where you would find replacements for the dashboard/defroster trim -- probably need to find the panel that
@Paul Waterloo
posted a photo of without the trim pieces. The vents look like they need to be replaced also -- not sure what to recommend there.
You can buy the OEM replacement parts with the inlaid wood OR just full leather without inlays direct from Porsche or a reseller like Rose Passion. See my previous reply for link & parts numbers or contact your OPC
Prices will be eye watering for new parts though.
your best bet will be eBay or a breakers to find plain full black leather stripped from another car.
YouTube has examples on how to strip the whole interior. If youre a confident & patient DIYer it should be doable
Yes the carbon fiber was a sticker I found on the internet while trying to find replacements. I only have the real wood pictures and pieces you see in the pics.
I like the breakup of color as you say which is why I was thinking to break it up with black if I could not find the replacement trim without giving up and vital organ!
I looked on rose passion and they did not list a wood inlay or even the other trims were no longer available... so habe to find someone or an auto wrecker with one I can poach from. I'm on the hunt!

I have been hunting for that piece for a while.
I have slowly trying to replace the damaged and broken pieces in my car.
I did get the sticker piece that you can buy on eBay and took it to a local place that does hydrodip, the process where they dip it in the color or pattern you want. Then they clear coat it.
I did the bat wing as well.
Here are the results.it’s not perfect but looks good until I can find the replacements. You can have it dipped in savanna beige to match your dash.
Is the link below the "sticker" one you both are referring to on eBay for $269? The listing seems to indicate they are real carbon fiber. It should be pretty high quality (I would guess without having seen it first hand) and it might not look too bad to leave it carbon fiber since that trim at the top of the dash is somewhat isolated from the rest of the wood.

The hydrodip looks good. It looks like you have the light wood option, the dark wood option of the OP might be easier to match. It might also be possible to use wrap as long as you have a perfect trim piece to go over.

This one doesn't have as much burl, but is pretty close to the dark wood color and burl may not be noticeable on these thin trim pieces.
This may be a crazy suggestion, but this eBay listing (
https://www.ebay.com/itm/26625559003...Bk9SR7iwx7SOYg
) provides a full trim kit for almost every EXCEPT the defroster trim. I messaged the seller to see if he had the defroster trim and said he can add it for $49.
I've seen these listed a long time and always assumed they decals, but it appears to be a the trim kit (in plastic, not wood). The reviews are very positive overall, a couple for Boxsters. The burl wood looks correct in terms of grain but off in color -- at least in the picture it looks like it's not the right color (somewhere between the light wood and dark wood option). Still seems like it could be used as a base for hydrotip if someone has a lot of wood trim pieces that are damaged.
I have no experience with this seller or this product, but it seems interesting. My dark wood is still in pretty good shape, so I mostly have an only academic interest in this subject (for now).
Ahh yes. The decade of wood trim. I remember when Benz and Chrysler merged. Ugh, it was all over their models. Looked like a Camry interior. Woof. I've seen other 996s with wood trim and they ALL don't age well. Honestly though, the interior of the 996 isn't the selling point of this generation. They were all cheaply made to save money. If you plan on buying Porsche branded replacements you better hurry because they recently announced they're pulling back some of their offerings. Check it out:

Resurrecting this post. I was quoted $12k for the CF defroster panels from Sunset - black with yellow deviated stitching. I just about jumped for joy when I saw the
@peterp
link above and saw that they were still for sale. Even if these have to be replaced a couple times it is a huge savings. I will let you know how they work.
