Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

There seems to be quite a few of you who track your 996's on a regular basis. How do you get into that? PCA track events are few, the only DE event on the calendar even close to me so far this year is in Nevada (hi Dell).
I'm in Southern California, but wouldn't mind jaunting around to find a good track.
Onramps aren't cutting it anymore!
PCA DE's are great, but also look for ones put on by local BMW and Audi clubs. They will probably require you to buy a membership and are usually very well run as well. There may be other clubs in your area that also put on DE's. Try checking with the closest track to see who hosts events there.
Rick, there certainly should be more than the one track event for the entire yr., hopefully someone local will chime in. In the north west I've really liked the way PCA and BMW clubs host their event. I am still hesitant to run with NASA. I am planning to stick to these two clubs if possible and may look into the audi club as well this yr. Hope this helps.

Edit, I agree with the fast typing Mike.
Rick, you can come participate in our event and you do NOT even have to be a member. We have our first event of the spring the first weekend of March at the track out in Pahrump (1 hour west of Vegas). Visit their track website at
http://www.springmountainmotorsports.com/
The track is 3.1 miles and a BLAST to drive. Very technical with 18 very technical turns with 3 great straight-aways. Feel free to PM me if you are interested in coming out and I will get you the paperwork.
If you have a little bit of time to wait go the eBay route. I got mine there and saved over $100 for a BRAND NEW helmet that I shopped for through local race shope and OGRacing (online). Saved myself tax and paying retail (or even discounted retail).
If you need it yesterday, OGRacing is the way to go. Free shipping and great selection and prices. I have bought alot of stuff through them.
On down the slippery slope....
You may want to also look into Autocross events that might be near you. They may be held more frequently and give you a chance to practice your skills a bit before heading to the track.
SCCA Solo
Rick - by far the best way to go is Porsche Owners Club - POC:

They have track events at Willow Springs on a regular basis and have a good program to introduce you to driving on a track. I just went through it last year and couldn't be happier. Let me know if you want to speak with one of their staff, I've gotten to know some of them pretty well.
Good luck!!
Try the PDE, it's a good, but expensive intro. The PCA 's are the best, the 'other 'groups tend to be a little fast and loose, which can be fun, just be careful.
Your car was made for this, have a blast!
The LA chapter of the PCA tends to do more concours and wine country tours, not much on the track. The San Diego chapter has a lot of track events, but their prerequiste requirements are a bit much for someone who lives in LA. You have to do several of their autocross events (at Qualcom stadium) to be able to particicpate in their track events. In SoCal, you'll get more track time sooner with POC.
I also recommend the BMW CCA (car club of America). They have great instructors!!! However, they're not as familiar with P-Cars as the POC instructors. That being said, if you call the coordinator of the event and ask for an instructor who's familiar with P-Cars, you'll probably get one. BMW CCA's approach is a bit more structured and regimented than POC.
I'm not saying that BMW club's approach is better, just different. Different people learn in different ways. If you prefer a classroom approach, definitely go to a BMW DE. If you prefer a more hands-on approach, POC's the way to go. If you want to have as much fun as possible, do both (my recommendation).
The San Diego chapter of the BMW club has a 2-day DE at Buttonwillow the weekend of 2/18. The next POC event isn't until the weekend of April 8.

nutbeem, you might want to give a call to some local tuner shops (preferably ones who deal in porsches/euro cars) and see if they're hosting any track days.
its usually a good/cheap way to get on the track, but you loose the invaluable advice of having an instructor there the first time out, although i'm sure the more experienced guys probably have hrs of race time under their belts and will be more than happy to show you the lines and give you pointers.
be safe, have fun, keep the rubber side down
OG racing, also speed warehouse has great prices, closeout deals. To wet you appetite, I have a video of mine at the glen kickin'*** and takin' names( esp a m3), I'll try and post it later tonight.

Talk to John Ruther. He owns the place and is the Chief Driving Instructor for the PCA Chicago Region.
As far as buying a helmet goes, I'd strongly recommend that you don't buy one on-line unless you're 100% sure that the model/size will fit and be comfortable. I tried about 5-6 different helmets before I could find one that was comfortable. For whatever it's worth, I bought a Bieffe. Admittedly, I have a rather large head so finding a good fit is a bigger problem for me than most. But I wouldn't buy a helmet without trying it first just like I wouldn't buy a suit or a pair of jeans. Just because it's the right size doesn't mean it's going to fit. If you buy on line, make sure you know which model/size is right for you and don't buy based on S/M/L (or XXL in my case).
-RC
Totally agree with RC with one caveat. I would definitely buy online to save some of the retail cost as well as the tax as well most will offer free shipping. BUT.......take the advice of RC with respect to finding the right helmet. I went to a few local speed shops to find the right helmet and size and as much as I wanted to give them my business they just couldn't match the price of the online purchase I made. Not to mention to OUTRAGEOUS sales tax rate here in Vegas (8.25%).
Rich - Based on my experience, I would go with a more structured organizer in the beginning so that you learn the basic handling of your car and to understand its limits, i.e. get a good foundation first.
Orange County PCA is throwing a car handling event on Feb 25 so you can sign up for that too!
In terms of autx, this could help you but being on the track is a bit different. For autx in socal, go to solo2.org and San Diego BMW Club has a nice course.
For track in socal, their are many organizers with varying degrees of structure.
I like NASA, redline, driving concepts, and speedtrial usa.
One more bit of advice, stay stock and if you need to mod the car, doing it corresponding to your progress in your driving career. Also, for the first two years try to stay with street tires.
Good luck and be safe.
2003 BMW Z4
2001 C2 Aero
2000 BMW M Coupe - track rat
2005 Tacoma - tow rat
2006 MZ4 Coupe - incoming
I second that. Excellent service and prompt shipping. I received my Bell M2 helmet and I couldnt be more satisfied! Very informative and helpful staff. Competitively priced also. Good luck either way. I would suggest also a safety inspection to make sure your car is in good working order before hitting the track - just to be on the safe side. Have fun!
I agree, size up the helmet and get the RIGHT size. That means one that isnt too loose, covers your entire head, and is not too tight where you have trouble getting it off. Try on several or have your head measured like I did - that will get you the exact size of helmets. Also buy a SA2005 if they are out... not sure, but they will be "legal" for the longest out of the available helmets AND the majority of the clubs/organizations support the latest in helmets.
Rick H - POC has a promotional dvd that may help you out. If you want a copy, pm me your mailing address and I'll have their office send you a copy. The next event at Willow Springs is April 8-9 and there's also a cup race at the Fontana Speedway that's a joint event with PCA on March 24-26. Should be lots of people you can talk to at that event...
